 Lawn left his successful career with Earth's Security Forces to persue a life in space.  Something about the adventure appealed to him, not to mention...flying.  He always wanted to pilot a starship.  Every chance he got as a policeman, he took his hover-cruiser as fast as it would go. He really wanted his first Starfleet assignment to be at the helm of a sophisticated starship.
-He also wanted to bring his extensive tactical experience to the bridge of a Federation vessel, without the mundane jobs of a cop.  He had spent over a decade in public safety, and was tired of the entry level patrol duties.  He hopes his command experience in law enforcement will be of use to his new command crew.  While helm and tactical are two different assignments, Lawn hopes to bridge that gap and become an essential component of his ships fighting force.
+His first assignment on the USS Challenger was as Alpha-shift Helmsman (a fact he was very proud of). Lawn quickly promoted through the junior ranks and became a department head.  He served as COO and eventually, CTO.  An interesting course of events lead to several key crew members transfering and the FO being re-assigned as a "diplomatic officer".  At this point, Captain Frazier appointed Lawn to the position of First Officer.
-Eventually, Lawn wants to become a department head, and someday, command his own Starship.  He has extensive command experience from his law enforcement career.  When he enlisted, his recruiter told him he would likely promote quickly.
