Miles’ intention upon joining Starfleet was to enlist in the Marine Corps, and he began his studies in that direction. He prepared for the physical agility portion of the Marine training, and during the qualification, Miles injured his left knee tearing ligaments around the knee. This unfortunate accident required a few months of rehabilitation that forced him to focus on a security major rather than the Marines.  

Miles graduated from Starfleet Academy on stardate 238605.27. Miles’ goals were to major in security with the dreams of joining the Starfleet Marine Corps, but an injury kept him from that career path. Miles kept security as his major and decided on the long term goal of a command position aboard a starship.
