 The starship Columbia was named in honor of the old earth space shuttle Columbia that was destroyed in a tragic accident in 2003. The first ship to enter outer space with the name Columbia was a pioneer in earthâ�?��?�s early space history. It is no coincidence that Columbia will leave dry dock almost exactly 400 years after her ancestor entered earthâ�?��?�s orbit for the first time.

 This Columbia will sacrifice the battle capabilities of some more recent vessels, but she will be equipped with some of the latest breaking and largely untested Starfleet technology. What Columbia lacks in offensive firepower, she will make up with technological advancement. Part of her mission will be experimenting with the latest technology as well as exploring areas of the galaxy that no vessel has previously dared to explore.

The Columbia's mission is to "pitch" the benefits of Federation membership. Admiral Philson, the director of First Contact at Starfleet HQ assures that this mission should seem more like shore leave for the crew as the Delorians are well known for their hospitality.
-The Delorians do favor entrance into the Federation, however with their proximity to Romulan space, Federation sources have hinted that the Delorians are also considering joining the Romulan Star Empire which would give the Romulans a significant system so close to Federation space and Starbase 118. Despite the current peace the Federation enjoys with the Romulans, the Federation cannot let the Romulan acquire a stragetically important area of space should the political landscape change.
