Launched from StarBase 118 on Stardate 237506.09, the USS Indria-A was assigned as a covert operations vessel. The Indria is a Nebula Class starship. The Nebula class design was chosen for the covert operations assignment as it has an interchangeable mission pod, this makes the ship very flexible in terms of capabilities. As such the Indria can provide a platform for a variety of mission types.
The USS Indria-A was first launched in the mid-2370's under the command of, then, Commander Shaun Marlin. The command of the vessel passed to, then, Commander Valarious McGregor on Stardate 237611.02 when Rear Admiral Marlin was recalled to an administrative post on Starbase 118. Captain McGregor was later given command of the USS Wallace and the Indria crew moved to that vessel with her. Following Captain McGrego's reassignment, the Indria was based at Starbase 118 on cold standby where she was occasionally used by varying crews for one-off missions rather than being on active patrol.

The Indria-A was thrust into significance some time ago when it was hijacked by a rebel member of the Romulan Tal Shiar. In the time it was taken, the rebel agent fitted the ship with a cloaking device, and was planning to use the Indria as the flagship, in a fleet of Warbirds, in an attempted hostile take-over of the Romulan government. With the help of the Romulan government the Indria crew recovered the Indria, however she was very heavily damaged in the process.
The Indria-A also has its sister ship serving out of StarBase 118, the USS Ranger-A. After the end of the Dominion War, the Indria's mission classification was changed to exploration, although the vessel is still occasionally given covert ops missions. The Indria underwent a minor refit in early 2385 during which Fleet Captain Rocar ordered the removal of the vessels more advanced and experimental tactical systems. Following her considerable downgrade, Fleet Captain Rocar assigned the Indria to the command of Commander Cura Assanti to investigate rumours of a cloaked planet.

The Romulan government, deeply embarrassed by the incident, did not enforce its earlier threat to remove the cloaking device by force, obviously assuming the cloak had been heavily damaged with the rest of the vessel. The cloaking device however had only received superficial damage, and was repaired. As such the Indria is the only current Starfleet ship, other than the USS Defiant, with a cloaking device that does not break the Romulan-Federation peace treaty. (As the cloak was fitted by Romulans.)
