Solar surfing had developed across the Federation as a Bajoran-inspired counterculture to advances in technology. It consisted of a board or small ship equipped with basic shielding and a life support suit propelled by a solar-powered engine capable of attaining high speeds ad manoeuvrability in sub-orbital conditions. The dangerous sport largely petered out on most Federation worlds by the time Arion got into it, but it remained very popular as part of a larger radical sub-culture of anti-joining Trill youths. An overzealous crackdown from the mostly joined-Trill-led authorities only encouraged it as an act of rebellion against a perceived clique of out-of-touch elders.

While Arion mostly competed in the races as an independent racer at first, he soon discovered he was particularly good at assembling and maintaining the engines of the craft. His skills soon gained the attention of one of the bigger gangs winning him a supporting role in their operations as they sought to illegally enable and expand the sport. Speed steadily became his main obsession as he took primitive technology to its limits, and sometimes, even beyond them. When one of his friends died during a race because of an engine failure, Arion turned himself in to the police but was conditionally released when it emerged the engine had been sabotaged by a rival gang.

Though his release was conditional on refraining from further solar surfing, the death of his friend had already ended Arion’s passion for the sport. He felt responsible regardless of the sabotage, realizing how reckless his aggressive design philosophy had been. Arion spent a short stint in an educational program for troubled youths but was soon deemed to be reaccumulated and returned to the general education system. Yadzin took a leave of absence as soon as she could to try and help her troubled sibling. While they couldn’t reconnect entirely after so many years of misunderstandings, Arion admired his sister’s successful career and discipline and sought to emulate it.

Arion spent a short stint in an educational program for troubled youths but was soon deemed to be reaccumulated and returned to the general education system. Yadzin took a leave of absence as soon as she could to try and help her troubled sibling, and while they couldn’t reconnect entirely, Arion came to admire his sister’s successful career and discipline and sought to emulate it.

While at first resisted entry due to his past troubles with the authorities. Arion worked hard to prove himself through volunteer work and a newly discovered zeal for his studies. When he turned 18, he entered and passed the academy entrance exam. Arion was naturally drawn to engineering as his major, particularly to the courses on impulse propulsion, warp theory, and alternative FTL tech. He also chose to minor in helm/nav and become a licensed pilot. The return to an alien environment such as Earth helped him remove himself from his last links to his more checkered past on Trill and helped him realize that he was more at home away from Trill as part of something bigger.

After his third year, Arion spent a semester on DS 9 and Bajor as part of the field training program where he helped in the construction of lightships for the celebration of the 10th anniversary of its admission to the Federation. At the height of the event, Arion co-piloted one of the ships through the Sol system as part of an exhibition of Bajoran technology on Earth. The ship suffered an unexpected failure of one of its sails as it passed by Saturn but Arion was able to overcome the damage allowing the ship to successfully reach Earth. This feat proved to be the deciding factor in assigning him to engineering onboard the USS Constitution upon graduation.
