Arion was born on Bajor during his parents’ service as humanitarian volunteers on the planet and Cardassian space (though he was prevented from accompanying them to the latter). His mother, while originally a paramedic and rescue worker, gradually started teaching science as the humanitarian situation on Bajor improved. His father was sent to Bajor as an agricultural consultant though he steadily also gained a reputation for his music. His sister had already developed a knack for martial arts by the time Arion was born and the two had a close bond.
Arion was an unexpected though not unwelcome addition to his family and spent much of his childhood on Bajor until their return to Trill after Bajor’s admission to the Federation. The main reason was to accompany his sister through her initiation. She had by then graduated from Starfleet academy as a security officer and applied to the Symbiosis Commission. Arion, having come to admire his sister, briefly developed a passion for the idea.
Life on Trill was quite the culture shock for Arion who had grown accustomed to at least the concept of equality between sentient beings that simply wasn’t plausible in a society boasting a social elite with centuries of experience. While at first taking matters in stride, spending much of his time shyly tinkering with technology, his sister’s joining changed the course of his life. A previously close companion and idol seemed to become a stranger to him.
Yadzin Mal continued to climb the ranks of Starfleet combining her training as a security officer with her diplomatic experience as a DMZ officer. Arion took the growing distance between them because of her isolated demanding posts as an apparent rejection brought on by the joining and grew to resent it. He turned his tech talents and desire for new friends towards solar surfing. By the time Yadzin realized what had happened between them, it was too late.
Solar surfing had developed across the Federation as a Bajoran-inspired counterculture to advances in technology. It consisted of a board equipped with basic shielding and life support suit propelled by a solar-powered impulse engine. The sport attracted a large following among Trill youths as an overzealous crackdown from the mostly joined-Trill-led authorities only encouraged it as an act of rebellion against a perceived clique of out-of-touch elders.
While Arion also competed, he was particularly good at assembling and maintaining the engines of the craft, giving himself a supporting role in one of the gangs illegally enabling the sport. Speed steadily became his main obsession as he took primitive technology to its limits. When one of his friends died because of an engine failure, Arion turned himself in but was conditionally released when it emerged the engine had been sabotaged by a rival gang.
Though his release was conditional on refraining from further solar surfing, the death of his friend had already ended Arion’s passion for the sport. He felt responsible regardless of the sabotage, realizing how reckless his aggressive design philosophy had been. Yadzin soon took a leave of absence to try and help her troubled sibling. While they couldn’t reconnect entirely, Arion admired his sister’s successful career and discipline and sought to emulate it.
While at first resisted entry due to his past troubles with the authorities. Arion worked hard to prove himself through volunteer work and a newly discovered zeal for his studies. When he turned 18, he entered and passed the academy entrance exam. Arion was naturally drawn to engineering as his major, particularly to the courses on impulse propulsion, warp theory, and alternative FTL tech. He also chose to minor in helm/nav and become a licensed pilot.
After his third year, Arion spent a semester on DS 9 and Bajor as part of the field training program where he helped in the construction of lightships for the celebration of the 10th anniversary of its admission to the Federation. At the height of the event, Arion co-piloted one of the ships through the Sol system as part of an exhibition of Bajoran technology on Earth. Upon graduation, he was assigned to engineering onboard the USS Constitution.
