Arvo Kass was born on the Sethaline Gamma colony to Johann Kass, a young human security officer. His mother, an Orion, is unknown. The mother's relationship with Johann is also unknown.

Ill suited to raising a half-human half-Orion child, at age 9, Johann reached out to various orphanages and religious orders on and near Orion to take the boy in. Now a de facto vassal state for the Klingon Empire, Orion had started focusing more on martial education. Eventually, the General Timu Gozun Military Academy on Orion agreed to accept him.

Arvo was bullied mercilessly for being half-human and especially his lighter than normal green skin. In short order, Arvo learned to defend himself and take action, quickly earning the respect of Academy instructors. Arvo especially excelled in marksmanship and has one numerous marksmanship tournaments both on Earth and Orion. Upon graduation, Arvo served 2 tours of duty in the Orion Space Navy (OSN). It was at a joint naval exercise with two Starfleet ships that Kass decided he wanted to attend Starfleet Academy.

Arvo Kass is one of the older cadets at the academy which segregates him even farther from his classmates. He chose the science path purely because it was a new direction for him. Arvo is either studying at his off-campus apartment in Oakland or hustling cadets for credits down at the Academy Gun Club pistol range.
