Hamada Kiyo was born and raised in Sapporo, capital city of the second largest island in Japan; Hokkaido.
As a child she was very shy, and during her school years this developed into an awkwardness that kept her from making many friends. The few friends she did make were more akin to study partners as she was more likely to be seen with her head in a piece of schoolwork than relaxing.
Despite her shy and studious nature, she was never on the receiving end of any bullying like some of the others, and this served to propel her further into her studies. Receiving excellent grades, she proceeded to almost literally breeze through her two years of college - even taking up an extra two-year course and managing to complete it entirely in her second year.
A fortnight visiting family in San Francisco prior to her 18th birthday resulted in an application to Starfleet Academy, which was accepted. Kiyo never returned home to Japan at the end of the family break, instead moving straight into student accommodation at the Academy.
The four years at the Academy saw Kiyo truly in her element and she scored highly on almost all of her subjects.
Further academic success, various other awards and promotions came easily, but also at the expense of never getting beyond her social awkwardness.
Having served aboard a handful of vessels as HCO, 2nd and 1st Officer, Kiyo gladly accepted a lecturers post back at the Academy.
A new role, a new home, and a fresh list of new things to learn.
Maybe it was time to finally put 'learn to make friends' on the list?
