His mother and father never expected their relationship to be a long term one nor had they expected a child to come of it. An agreement was made shortly after Kortho’s birth that his mother would raise him, with allowances for him to spend time each year with his father to know both worlds he could call home.

Growing up it was assumed he would one day join his father’s house as a warrior or Targ handler and from ages 7 to 17 all he could talk about for months out of the year was looking forward too or what he had been up too while staying at his Klingon side of the family’s estates. Things changed rather abruptly just before he turned 18, leading to his joining starfleet instead. To many who are aware of internal Klingon politics a simple reason might be that the house of Korthan was seen as vassal house that raised Targs and decent soldiers. a house open to the loyalty of whatever greater house paid them the most.

Outwardly Kortho shows little love of his Klingon family or culture beyond practicing Mok'bara and liking gagh, going so far as to keep using his mother’s surname to distance himself a bit further from his klingon side. It can be a touchy subject for him but he is used to getting asked things like “what kind of Klingon stuff do you follow?” which he often gives glib responses and tries to change the subject back to a work related topic.
