Her home village was small, poor and the standard of living and education was far below the acceptable norm. Sha was one of 9 children. 5 died due to disease, malnourished or other easily corrected problems. She was lucky. At age 10 she was sent to live with cousins. She was able to attend a good school, eat regular health meals. In school she strived to be the best. It worked and she was able to go on to attend University on a full scholarship.

 However during her first year she was approached by one of her professors who suggested she apply to starfleet academy. She considered it for a while and then applied. While at the Academy she excelled and graduated 3rd in her class.
