His social skills are extremely lacking due to growing up on a tradisionalist colony and then spending most of his life since then on backwater planets.

Her home village was small, poor and the standard of living and education was far below the acceptable norm. Sha was one of 9 children. 5 died due to disease, malnourishment or other easily corrected problems. She was lucky. At age 10 she was sent to live with cousins. She was able to attend a good school, eat regular health meals. In school she strived to be the best. It worked and she was able to go on to attend University on a full scholorship.

 However during her first year she was approached by one of her professors who suggested she apply to starfleet academy. She considered it for a while and then applied. While at the Academy she excelled and graduated 3rd in her class.
