Vel’s parents met aboard the USS Catalina before the Dominion War, an unlikely pairing in that L’Vor was a Vulcan and Nicolás Careno an outgoing and bombastic engineer. Vel was likewise born aboard the Catalina, although she relocated to Earth along with her mother at the outbreak of the Dominion War. Nicolás would die when the Catalina was destroyed during the war in 2374, and Vel would grow up with no real memory of him. | |||
As a result of losing her father, Vel grew up clinging to her ‘lost’ human culture and ignored warnings that her Vulcan side would leave her prone to emotional extremes without Surakian philosophy to temper it. She caused no shortage of difficult for her mother and stepfather during her childhood and adolescence, and despite her gifted intellect she failed an early Starfleet Entrance Exam due to her inability to keep her emotions in check. | |||
Eventually, Vel would discover physical activity as a means to achieve focus and sooth her savage temper.
