While Irina originally joined the marines as a means to satisfy her desire for adventure, her plan at the time was to serve for five years and then return to the obvious career choice of music. It was always expected that Irina would follow in the footsteps of her parents, grandfather, all the way back to her distant ancestor Modest Mussorgsky in the 19th century and live the life of classical music. Everyone in her ancestral line, with a few exceptions, were either composers, conductors, or for the century plus before Irina's birth, members of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic's violin, cello or viola sections. | |||
Irina was badly injured when her shuttle crashed on Kjenta II in 2171 including nerve damage to her left hand that prevented her from playing the violin, however her commanding officer, Admiral Toni Turner, performed a successful surgery in which nerve tissue from a deceased marine was grafted into her left hand and wrist restoring much of the lost control. While playing is painful, Irina gets finds the price a manageable one for the ability to once again play her beloved violin. She spends a lot of time practicing these days, and hopes in the distant future to take a position in an orchestra when Starfleet is eventually finished with her. Irina is no longer world-class, but she is certainly at or slightly beyond the level that could get her a seat in almost any municipal orchestra or chamber group. | |||
In addition to the violin, Irina also knows how to play the related instruments of viola and cello, and is a functional, if uninspired guitarist. Besides the German and Russian Romantic-era music she favors, she is also a fan rock music from earth's "British Invasion" of the 1960s and of many artists and styles influenced by it. | |||
