'''Captain Karl Brunsig''' is currently serving as an instructor for Starfleet Academy. He was formerly the commanding officer of the '''[[USS Triumphant (alternate)|USS Triumphant]]''', in an alternate universe where the Federation lost the [[Dominion War]].

Karl Brunsig, born Walter Brunsig, served aboard the Triumphant for over 10 years, initially assigned as the ship's chief of security and tactical, then XO and finally the post of captain. He's seen Earth, Vulcan and Qo'nos fall, many of his crew die, and watched the ship slowly fall apart courtesy of time and battle.  

He's cynical and acerbic, but unlike the man from the primary universe, he doesn't make a deliberate effort to annoy people and be an ass. As much as tries and pretends otherwise, he cares deeply about his people -- and when he can afford it, people in general, as evidenced by the rescue of the children and young adults in Training Camp Alpha. The Triumphant's dilapidated state and the seeming pointlessness of the guerrilla war weighed heavy on his shoulders, and after struggling with the decision for a time, eventually made the choice to accompany the [[USS Gorkon]] to its home universe, leaving the war behind.  

He's close with [[Cillian James (alternate)|Cillian James]] and [[Erin Reynolds]], both of whom he has known for many years, and both of whom seem willing to put up with his snark. He drinks, but he's rarely visibly drunk, and he's careful to maintain his fitness by working out regularly.
