James was born on Earth. The only child of Zachery and Stephanie Xander. Zachery was an enlisted member in Starfleet. He was a Chief Petty Officer at Utopia Planitia ship yards. Zachery was great with working with his hands. One day while working on a runabout he was shocked by a conduit thought to be deactivated. The shock caused Zachery to be knocked out and put in a coma. He eventually was able to come to but due to the nature of the shock his motor skills were limited. With the help of physical therapy he was able to regain 75% of his mobility back.
