[[Image:Jcumar.png|100px|thumb|left|Jonathan Cumar]] Leland's relationship with Jon Cumar stretches back to the age of six, when they met each other after Leland had been relocated to Brooklyn, NY to live with his Aunt and her family. Initially, Leland saw Jonathan as an annoyance, but gradually came to see him as a trusted confidant after having self-alienated himself from other children his age. Cumar's tenacity and positivity offset Leland's natural pessimism and tendency to dwell on the worst.
The two became fast friends and Leland constantly encouraged Jon to join the Academy, hoping that he could carry his one true friend into what he perceived as his destiny in Starfleet. To that end, he studied with Jon non-stop and fostered Jon's natural talent for geography and navigation (Leland himself getting constantly lost). For his part, Leland was aware of the nature of their relationship and sadly, took advantage of it as he was growing up. With few friends to call his own, Leland relied (with ever increasing regularity) on his more exuberant and physically adept friend to defend him in the court of popular opinion.
All of that changed once the two reached Starfleet Academy. Leland's natural gifts for analytics and threat analysis began to overshadow his friends natural piloting aptitude. Leland began to gain in favor with the faculty and he could see himself fast-tracked to a prominent role. In a rare moment of empathy, Leland decided to take his old friend out for a drink. What would follow then would change their relationship forever.... After drinking too much, Leland began to antagonize a table full of Klingons, the resulting attack cost Cumar his arm at the elbow. Now, both men serve aboard the {{USS|Victory}} together and Leland is forced to begin to pick up the pieces and get over his guilt.
