Hayden Reynolds is a medical doctor and was an officer of the Federation Starfleet. Notably, he was declared missing in action after the Starship Kestrel disappeared in 2376. Nick Parks and the crew of the Kestrel worked together to displace them from their lost dimension and Hayden and the rest of the Kestrel crew was rescued in 2384, at which point he rejoined Starfleet after six months of reintegration therapy. Nick Parks and the crew of the Kestrel worked together to displace them from an experimental warp bubble and Hayden and the rest of the Kestrel crew were rescued several months later. As a young man, he decided to dual enroll at both Starfleet Academy and the Berkeley Institute of Medicine, as he thought the combination would be the most challenging of all the options presented to him. By twenty, he had completed his sequences of study at both institutions, and he was assigned as a medical ensign to Starbase 515 in 2373. He stayed there for two years, contributing greatly to the medical research and leaving copious notes. In those two years, he was also advanced two ranks, making it up to full lieutenant. In the last days of 2375, Hayden was reassigned to the exploratory vessel Kestrel as its chief medical officer. As the CMO, he would have the chance to explore strange new diseases and medicines firsthand, and he quickly accepted.
As a young man, Hayden enrolled at both Starfleet Academy (in its biosciences program) and the Berkeley Institute of Medicine; this combination proved suitably challenging, and he took some a leave from BIM in his second year, completed his Starfleet studies and cadet cruise, and then returned for his medical degree (granted 2373) and residency (finished 2376). After his residency, he spent several years doing biomedical research as an ensign and then a junior lieutenant aboard Starbase 515, where he worked with immunology and virology with Vulcans and Andorians. He was promoted to full lieutenant and offered a post as an assistant chief medical officer aboard the USS Kestrel in 2381, and he served there until the Kestrel was the site of an experimental warp bubble accident in late 2383. Following the rescue of Hayden and the Kestrel crew, he spent a month and a half recovering, during which time he met colleagues of Lily Ventu, who would become his wife.

Early in the morning of January 15, 2376, the Kestrel had just passed beyond Federation space - Deep Space 15 had gone to aft about twelve hours earlier. Half a day later, DS15 received an emergency distress call from the ship - the Kestrel had encountered an unknown anomaly that had caused massive damage, and they were experiencing a warp core breach. DS15 immediately sent ships to investigate, but there was nothing left - the Kestrel had vanished without a trace. There were no escape pods, no debris, no ion trail leading away, and no sign of the strange anomaly. With no conclusive data, Starfleet notified the families of the one hundred and eighty-six people aboard the Kestrel that they were 'missing in action'.
Following this leave period, Hayden was assigned to the Independence-A as an assistant chief medical officer, and then later as the vessel's chief medical officer. He met and began a relationship with Lily Ventu at this time, one that continued through their mutual assignment to the Tiger and to Starbase 118. Hayden and Lily were married at the end of 2385 and had their first and only child, Rhys, one year later. Lily resigned from Starfleet after a brief time as the starbase's commanding officer and was offered a position as ambassador by the Federation a year after Rhys's birth; shortly thereafter, Hayden accepted a position as first officer aboard the hospital ship USS Mederios. After the unexpected promotion of his CO, Hayden was offered that position; and shortly after that, when the aging Mederios was to be decommissioned, Hayden was offered the CO-ship of the Aquitania, a position that he's enjoyed since.

A year and a half later, Hayden's notes were rediscovered by another bright young ensign at Starbase 515, Nick Parks. Since Nick's interests lay outside of the medical field and more in the realm of subspace theory, he found most of Hayden's journals of little interest - until the Kestrel incident. Hayden talked extensively about perhaps seeing the anomaly that the Kestrel had reported before its disappearance. Nick researched the anomaly, and the Kestrel, until, finally, he discovered that the Kestrel had not been destroyed. The anomaly had acted as an extreme point of interdimensional fatigue, and the Kestrel had fallen into an alternate dimension through a kind of bubble in subspace. It took him the better part of two years, but Nick eventually found a way to punch a communications signal through, and there he made contact with the Kestrel, where most of the crew were alive and well; they had been exploring the alternate dimension, looking for a way home.
While their careers make maintaining a strong family and social life often difficult, both Lily and Hayden are committed to their relationship. Rhys is with both parents as often as possible, and both Lily and Hayden pull whatever strings they can in order to be assigned to similar areas. When Lily ran for a seat on the Federation Council, Hayden was able to get the Aquitania assigned as her diplomatic ferry, harkening back to the ship's roots. Since then, he has tried to get the Aquitania assigned, with the Garuda to the Menthar Corridor.

After Nick Parks and the crew of the Kestrel succeeded in finding a way out of the alternate dimension, Hayden and the rest of the crew were debriefed for several weks before being granted clearance to return to their duties. Hayden was posted, at the urging of Nick and then at his own request, to the Independence, to assist the new medical department. Aboard the Independence, Hayden served in an advisory position to Lily Ventu, while trying to re-assimilate into Starfleet life himself. He made few friends in his first months aboard the ship, alienating almost everyone he worked with save Ventu (who had worked, somewhat indirectly, with Parks to secure his return) and his cousin, Quinn Reynolds, who he re-discovered running the engineering department. Hayden was made CMO on the Independence after a quick succession of other officers, through Independences trip across the galaxy. After the Independence returned to Federation space, Hayden found himself a more prominent, recognized, and well-liked member of both the medical staff and the crew. Starting in March of 2385, he also found himself the supervising resident of doctoral student Elizabeth Hathaway, a relationship that continued, as his blossoming romantic one with Lily, once they all transferred to the USS Tiger. With that transfer came Hayden's advancement to attending physician and head of surgery.

From the Tiger, Hayden was promoted to lieutenant commander and given emergency command of a hospital ship, the USS Antares, for a three-month period in 2385. Although his supervisors were impressed with his work, he requested a transfer to Starbase 118 when Lily told him that she was both pregnant and transferring. Once there, he served as the medical chief of the Federation diplomatic mission aboard the starbase for a trial period of six months before accepting reassignment as commanding officer first of the Mederios and then the Aquitania.
