"Glory is meaningless, what matters is being the best pirate around and we are the best there is."
a Kreel boast.
The Kreel are a species of raiders and pirates, masters of hitting and running whose love and thrill at the game of cat and mouse seems to dominate their very culture.

History

The Kreel evolved on a fairly harsh world, yet one that had plenty of raw resources and an abundance of food. This allowed them to survive and develop at a fairly consistent rate. Even with the numerous border disputes between the various tribes and the constant ongoing raids and thefts. Strangely enough these activities very rarely ever escalated into real warfare. In fact over time they became more of a hobby and trial of skill.

Regardless they eventually developed space flight, followed a number of years later by warp drives. This allowed them to explore the universe around them and to expand on their little past time of raiding and stealing from their neighbors.

Soon they had quite a reputation and while they did not resort to murder and bloodbaths except in self-defense they would steal from anyone including the Klingons, Cardassians and other advanced species. Their only real competition was the Dahri another species of raiders and pirates. This continued for many years with them mastering the art of running and hiding from more powerful enemies and preying on the weak and defenseless.

Even after the establishment of the Federation and its ever expanding borders they continued to prey on any and all likely targets using their skills as raiders to run and hide when needed. This lasted until 2275 when the Federation finally identified their homeworld on the rimward border of the Klingon Empire.

Following this, raids by Kreel on Federation vessels dropped off drastically but did not end entirely. The Kreel claimed that numerous renegades continued to operate, maintaining the valued traditions of their people. At the same time the Kreel did continue to raid those species that were not inside the Federation or who were not members of the Federation with continued vigor.

In the 2288, a Starfleet officer and certain Federation officials visited Kreel, backed by 3 Federation warships to discuss the activities of the Kreel and to discover what they knew about an intergalactic terrorist named Black Heart. At this time the Kreel revealed that to the best of their knowledge this individual had been killed earlier that year by Catalano, the Karimean leader of the Worthy.

Further discussions between the leaders of the fractional Kreel and the Federation representatives were backed up by a display of force by the 3 warships present. This resulted in the Kreel Accords which left no doubt as to how the Federation would deal with future acts of piracy inside the Federation borders.

In 2346, Kreel scavengers were the first to arrive and go through the wreckage of the Khitomer Massacre.

In early 2365, the Kreel discovered a stash of advanced weaponry on an uninhabited planet and began attacking Klingon ships with them. The USS Enterprise was called in to mediate the dispute.

Sometime prior to 2373, a Kreel raider was defeated by Nelkarites, who modified and used the vessel as their own.

In the year 2373, the starship USS Enterprise-E set a course for the Kreel system after engaging a Jem'Hadar battle cruiser and rescuing the Maquis transport, Orb of Peace.

In 2376, the Kreel assisted the Al'Hmatti freedom fighters and attacked Klingon ships. The IKS Gorkon was called in to escort Ambassador Worf to mediate the dispute.

During 2378, the Kreel were one of several races to attempt to scavenge the Rashanar Battle Site. Wesley Crusher had disguised himself as a Kreel in order to rescue Jean-Luc Picard.

At some point between 2377 and 2380, the Kinshaya conquered the Kreel and absorbed their resources as the first step of their escalation in their long-time conflict with the Klingon Empire. This finally ended the ongoing raids and piracy being conducted by the Kreel.

Government

Before they were defeated and absorbed into the Kinshaya they had a chaotic and troubled council made up of representatives from all of the major tribes. The needs and wants of the minor tribes were ignored and not considered worthy of consideration. As can be expected this resulted in their being fragmented or involved in political infighting to the point where very little ever got accomplished.

Since their defeat it is apparent that they no longer have any say in their future, government or policies.

Description

The Kreel physique consists of broad, heavily muscled (almost triangular) torsos and long arms (hanging nearly to their knees) with three-fingered hands, supported by incongruously spindly legs. They display little or no neck structure, limiting the motion of their heads and requiring them to physically twist around to see to their sides or rear.

They have huge eyes compared to most humanoids (ca. 7-8 cm in diameter) beneath an overhanging brow ridge, and commonly also have a "lantern jaw". Their skin is extremely wrinkled and dry, "sunburned red" in color, and their bodies have a thin layer of coarse, matted hair, though the thickness can vary over various parts of the body. Kreel clothing tends to be simple and minimal, usually breeches and skimpy tunics, to better show off their physiques.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

Psychology

The Kreel are a space-faring humanoid race of primarily scavengers. They have frequently come into conflict with the Klingons due to their habit of picking at the remnants of Klingon defeats or victories after the Klingons have departed. As a result they have often been compared to jackals.

Their upbringing and social custom of conducting raids and thefts upon any and all neighbors have given them a rather cynical and cunning outlook on life. While they suffer from all of the expected mental disorders expected of intelligent species they find it extremely difficult to trust anyone not a member of their immediate tribe. This may be because they are taught from childhood that anyone and everyone who is not a member of their tribe is fair game.

Religion

While they do not really have a religion, they do venerate a few legendary raiders who seemed to have performed the impossible, over and over again. As a result they will sometimes swear by one of these mythic individuals. It is the closest thing they have to giving their word and only if they have sworn by one of these individuals do any of them feel even the slight need to live up to their end of the deal.

Mythology

While they have a vast supply of tales, myths and legends regarding various different raiders from different times, most of these are strictly tribal in origin and as such will normally not be known by other tribes. This does not apply to the few legendary raiders who seemed to have been the inspiration for their entire society. These tales are known to every single male Kreel alive.

Society

On their world the planet is divided up into tribal regions. Each tribal region is commanded and looked after by a different tribe. As a result some regions are well looked after with good cities and numerous amenities as well as abundant infrastructure, while others are a cesspool of crime, graft and want.

Culture

They have very little use for most forms of artistic expression other than to steal it and sell it for a profit. The same cannot be said of music. They love ballads, songs that tell a story and it is every raider’s dream that he will live forever in song. As can be expected, most if not all of these songs were written to serve as drinking songs. They are meant to be enjoyed in the company of others in some kind of drinking establishment.

Customs

Conducting raids and thefts on other tribes is a long standing and socially acceptable custom. In fact a male may not even attempt to gain a mate until he has successfully conducted at least 25 raids on other tribes which have netted him a recognizable reward. At this time he can steal a bride who is then obligated to become his mate for life.

Technology

They are behind the Federation in many different fields but have stolen or traded for military technology and ships defensive and offensive systems. As a result their ships are much more advanced than their society would seem to indicate.

Economy

Each tribe has the authority to negotiate its own trade deals but due to their reputation there are not that many species willing to trust them. As a result while they do have a few deals that supply them with goods and materials they need for the most part they rely on piracy, raids and black market trades to keep their economy going.

Military

The Krell operated more as light raiders and pirates than as a real military. As a result they only built and operated small vessels. However these vessels were extremely maneuverable, fast and packed a punch equivalent to ships at least one size class bigger than they were. The other factor is that all of these ships belonged to one tribe or another and would normally never operate or co-operate with ships from another tribe.

At this time it is unknown how this will have changed since they were defeated and absorbed by the Kinshaya although most experts believe that they may be used as raiders and screening forces in the future.

Raider

This vessel is the equivalent of a light cruiser and was the largest vessel that they built. With a crew of 350 plus another 100 infantry for boarding actions it could normally hold its own for short periods of time with full sized cruisers.

Light Raider

This vessel is the equivalent of a destroyer and was their most popular ship. With a crew of 250 plus another 50 infantry for boarding actions it could normally hold its own for short periods of time with light cruisers.

Jackel

This vessel is the equivalent of a frigate and was moss produced to operate in small packs. As a result they were often more dangerous than the larger pirate vessels. With a crew of 150 plus another 15 infantry for boarding actions it could normally hold its own for short periods of time with destroyers. However since they normally always operated in small packs they could easily tackle a full sized cruiser and pose a serious threat to it.
