"Klic, bbuzz, cclikk, mmmuu, bbbbzz, rrrmm, kckikc. (We serve the queen, now and forever.)"
a Jarada proverb.
The Jarada are a species of xenophobic intelligent insectoids ruled by a matriarchal monarchy, that live in massive communities they call a hive and who can become highly aggressive if they feel they have been slighted or insulted.

History

The Jaradans were strategically important to the Federation during the mid-24th century. Previous attempts with the species failed because they were so easily irritated. In order to have a successful contact with the Jaradans, they demanded a precise greeting by the Federation's emissary.

2344 marked the last encounter with the Jaradans for twenty years. A slip in the pronunciation of the greeting caused a twenty-year rift between the two governments. Reports from the last Federation starship that attempted contact with the Jaradan existed only in the form of record tapes. These tapes graphically demonstrated what happened when that ship's captain offended the Jaradan; a mistake the Federation wished not to repeat as they can be quite vengeful if wronged and actually ate the crew of the ship that mispronounced the greeting.

In 2364, the USS Enterprise-D conducted a diplomatic mission to the Jarada, where Jean-Luc Picard was to make a brief but necessary contact with the Jarada, in an attempt to mend their rift.

Upon approach of the Jaradan sector, one of their long-range probes disrupted the holodeck systems on the ship. Following their probe, they sent a subspace message to the Enterprise, requesting to speak with Picard, who was, unfortunately trapped in the now malfunctioning holodeck. His first officer Commander William T. Riker attempted to explain the delay to the Jarada, but they refused to speak to a mere subordinate.

Fortunately, by the time the Enterprise achieved orbit of the Jaradan homeworld, Picard was able to overcome the delay and successfully make the delivery. In doing so, he honored the Jaradans with his words of greeting, and allowed a new day to dawn between the two governments.

By 2365 the Pakleds had made contact with the Jarada. The Pakled transport, Mondor, appeared to possess Jaradan technology.

During the Iconian Gateways Crisis in the year 2376, a gateway linked Torona IV to the colony on Europa Nova. Commander Elias Vaughn successfully negotiated with the xenophobic Jarada to allow five hundred thousand Europani evacuees to seek refuge on their planet through the gateway.

After evacuating all Europani from Torona IV, the USS Defiant was inexplicably attacked by the Jarada. Determined to keep the convoy of starships leaving the Torona system safe, Vaughn ordered the Defiant to flee the Jarada attack on impulse power only. The attack caused all diplomatic relations between the Federation and the Jarada to break down, although neither the Federation Council or Starfleet Command was concerned.

Government

Each hive is ruled by a matriarchal monarchy which is led by a single queen. This individual has complete and total authority and control over every single member of her hive.

Description

Physically, they had a triangular face with a broad forehead, large compound eyes, a narrow pointed snout with a hooked jaw and sharp teeth, and long feathery antennae. They had barrel-like segmented torsos with four arms on the upper end. The lower pair was larger and the upper pair were almost vestigial, and they had three clawed hands. They also had two pairs of legs, the lower pair being thicker and used for movement, and the top pair being thinner and used to balance the body.

Physiology

As with most intelligent species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

Their exoskeletons ranged in different colors, from black to russet to copper, and they also varied in size as well. They had at least 3 known sexes: male, female, and neuter. When translating their language, their voices are multi-tonal, like many voices speaking at once, and their language consisted of hums, clicks, and buzzes.

They had somewhat of a hive-mind, or a "group mind" that keeps track of each other to work in harmony. Each individual emits a sweet smelling "marker scent" determined by one's genetics and role in their society. Also when their names are broken down, it tells their place in society.

They have a large stinger.[1]

Psychology

The Jarada were known for their idiosyncratic attitude toward protocol and especially for their peculiar language. The slightest mispronunciation of their language by an outsider was regarded as an insult.

The Jarada were reportedly xenophobic to the point of being "fussy" according to Commander Elias Vaughn. The Starfleet Captain who made first contact with the Jarada mispronounced a single word during his overtures, setting the process back twenty years.

The Jarada typically refused to allow aliens on their planet, having even shot down a vessel attempting to make an emergency landing.

Religion

Most experts seem to agree that while the Jarada do not seem to have any organized form of religion, the degree of reverence and respect that they show to their queen’s borders on fanatical zealotry.

Mythology

At this time there is no evidence that they have any recorded or oral records that might have any data that could be considered legends or mythology.

Society

There are an unknown number of Jaradan hives. One of the more well-known hives was the Zel hive, which had colonized the planet Beltaxiyan Minor. These hives also contain a queen. It was on this colony that a madness disease affected their group mind, making a large number of them violently psychotic. This problem was solved by the crew of the Enterprise.

Culture

Based on what little data has been available there does not seem to be any proof that any member of their society except maybe the queens, even have the capability to appreciate or enjoy any form of artistic creativity or art form.

Customs

Observations made by those select few experts that have been allowed to have prolonged contact would seem to indicate that they do not possess any form or types of customs.

Technology

They are highly advanced in subspace mechanics and theoretical mathematics and with the recent treaties signed have provided several fascinating scientific exchanges.

Economy

They are completely self-reliant and due to their highly xenophobic nature have avoided entering into or conducting any kind of trade deals. Experts believe with the signing of the recent treaties between the Federation and the Jarada that they may be enticed into some limited trade in the future.

Military

Very little is known about their military organization. Observations have confirmed the existence of 3 different types of warships. One of which seems to be a light cruiser of some kind and then there is a dreadnaught that carries 20 small frigate class warships rated as less effective than the Federation, Defiant class and approximately 2/3rds the size of the Defiant.

Jarada warship

In 2376, the USS Defiant was attacked by several Jarada warships just before it was scheduled to depart orbit of Torona IV. To avoid the Jarada attacking civilian ships taking Europani refugees off Torona IV, Elias Vaughn was forced to order the Defiant to flee from the Jarada warships without firing on them.

Jaradan sector

The Jaradan sector was a region of space controlled by the Jarada. In the mid-24th century, the Jarada were considered of strategic importance to the United Federation of Planets.

Zel

Zel was a Jaradan hive structure. By the 24th century, the Zel hive had departed the Jarada homeworld of Torona IV and colonized the planet Beltaxiyan Minor, in the Beltaxiyan star system.

Jaradan language

Their language is an intricate and very complex language consisted of hums, clicks, and buzzes.

Intricacies of the pronunciation of Jaradan words include: an inverted "t" means to hold the "z", unless it is followed by three wavy lines, in which case the "z" becomes a "b." The "J" in Jarada is pronounced as an "H" (as in Spanish), and the species name is pronounced "Ha-RA-da".

Jean-Luc Picard was instructed to learn a Jaradan greeting during a brief contact mission to their homeworld in2364.
