Arek Ketteik was born to parents Osa and Breten Ketteik on Stardate 233408.21 in Hong Kong, China during one of his family’s diplomatic visits to Earth. Though he grew up on Krivos, he often visited Earth with his parents and younger sister, Nirea. However, at age 7, he showed signs of metamorphic abilities. He was taken from his parents to be raised in a royal village and trained in various subjects, including handling of his empathic gifts.

As a child, Arek showed a strong interest in various martial arts forms and as he became older, developed a fascination with various melee, hand, and large weapons. This led to him joining the Krivos planetary police force, driven by a desire to seek justice for the victims of violent crimes. However, the stress of his job causing severe depression, which all led to him questioning his calling.

At his partner’s insistence, he visited the ancient Temple of Akadar, seeking clarity and renewed purpose. During his time meditating and communing with the spirit of Akadar, he felt a strange drive to leave his homeworld and seek his purpose elsewhere. It was then that he recalled his visits to Earth, leaving for there to explore a possible new career path.

Upon arriving on Earth, he took a job as a night watchman for a civilian tech company where he met Jason Lim, a components engineer who dreamed of joining Starfleet to work on warp engines. After two years at the company, both applied to Starfleet. He and Arek majored in Security and Tactical.

However, during his cadet cruise, his crew came upon a freighter damaged in a pirate raid. While rendering aid to the freighter crew, he came across a 3-year-old Napean girl, the only child aboard, whose parents had been killed. His paternal instincts kicked in and he cared for the girl while attempts were made to track down living relatives. When none were found, he became her legal guardian and eventually adopted her as his own. Balancing parental responsibilities with his duties, he finished his cadet cruise and graduated from the Academy. Shortly after, he received his first posting aboard the USS Kepler, bringing his adopted daughter with him.
