SCIENCE OFFICER'S LOG
STARDATE: 239407.31

Science Officer's log, Stardate 239407.31. I have only been on board the USS Blackwell for a few days now, yet already the ship has encountered difficulty. We have encountered some form of anomaly; what Lieutenant Commander R'Ven is calling a "Verteron Snare". It is a most unusually phenomenon, in fact the entire region of space the USS Blackwell currently inhabits is bathed in verteron particles, the distribution and intensity of which is at the precise amount to disable a starship's warp capability while not causing any serious harm. This is further evidenced by the fact that while the Blackwell has suffered significant damage thus far, that is due entirely to the stress placed upon the ship by being pulled out of warp. I hypothesize that this is not a naturally occurring phenomenon.

There is a pocket of space nearby that is unaffected by the verteron particles and so piloting the Blackwell at impulse to that location is the most logical course of action. The convenience of such a small region, whose volume is around the size of a large starship, leads me to suspect that it is some form of trap. Unfortunately, we have very few other options available to us.

Science Officer's log, Supplemental. The Blackwell continues to be trapped in this strange pocket of space that has been bathed in verteron particles. The communications systems are once more in operation which is a welcome change from the blackout that the ship has enjoyed thus far. At Commander R'Ven's behest, I have launched two more probes into this anomaly. They have somewhat successfully mapped out the area of space in which the Blackwell is trapped. It appears to be approximately half of an Astronomical Unit in radius which the aforediscovered pocket of verteron-free space being at its epicentre. A strange ship has approached the Blackwell which does not match any recorded specifications. Only time will tell what their intentions are.

Science Officer's log, Stardate 239408.20. At long last, the Blackwell has finally come free from the verteron snare. The Atlantis was somehow able to deactivate the mines, nullifying their effects and allowing us to fly free. Another ship, going by the name of Regent, was responsible for the destruction of the mysterious ship. Most of the crew seemed to be familiar with the man in Command of the Regent, so I have no doubt that we will encounter them again.
