DEPARTMENT of XENOLOGY

"Our life support is failing, damage is too extensive for what remains of my crew to repair. This is the end."
a Promellian recording.
The Promellian are a species that is now believed to be extinct due to their genocidal war with the Menthar. Occasional relics, debris and other items have turned up over time to provide some information about them.

History

Now believed to be an extinct space-faring race, the Promellians were mutually destroyed with the Menthar over a thousand years ago (about the time of Earth's late Middle Ages, circa 1300s) in the battle of Orelious IX.

A key moment in Promellian history was their first contact with the Menthar species. A Promellian ship unknowingly intruded into a star system considered sacred by the Menthar, and came under attack by Menthar forces. The Promellian ship was destroyed, though not before destroying two of its attackers. Both sides declared war soon afterwards.

Menthar-Promellian War

The Menthar-Promellian War was a devastating conflict that erupted between the Menthar and Promellian species. The root cause of the war, at least according to the Federation, was believed to have been attributed to a Promellian starship that entered a holy Menthar system during a sacred time. This sparked off a catastrophic conflict between the two species which ultimately led to both of their destruction.

Government

Nothing is known about this aspect of their society. There are only a few historical records that have survived. These hold information regarding the war with the Menthar, logistical, supply data and casualty reports.

Description

They were largely humanoid oxygen-breathers and had a bony head-ridge much like the Klingons.

Physiology

Very little is known about this aspect of their society. There are only a few historical records that have survived. These hold information regarding the war with the Menthar, logistical, supply data and casualty reports. However some medical data was recovered which experts have analyzed to determine that they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes.

Psychology

Very little is known about this aspect of their society. There are only a few historical records that have survived. These hold information regarding the war with the Menthar, logistical, supply data and casualty reports. However some medical data was recovered which experts have analyzed. Unfortunately there was not enough data for them to make any educated guesses regarding this subject.

Religion

Nothing is known about this aspect of their society. There are only a few historical records that have survived. These hold information regarding the war with the Menthar, logistical, supply data and casualty reports.

Technology

The Promellians operated advanced battle cruisers which operated at a technology level that rated as rather crude in terms of 24th century Federation technology, but were highly advanced for their time. They also used a form of information storage device that was a crude analog of a 24th century Federation isolinear optical chip.

Economy

From the few historical records to be recovered it would seem that they had a strong internal economy as well as a fairly well established trade network.

Military

The Promellian battle cruiser was the model of simplicity, elegance and functionality. As the mainstay of the Promellian military, this craft was built for many generations prior to the 14th century. The design of the Promellian battle cruiser's bridge was well structured and sophisticated. The ship itself was provided with power by Lang cycle fusion engines.

In 2366, the derelict cruiser Cleponji was discovered by the USS Enterprise-D, under Captain Picard, near the remains of Orelious IX. The vessel was immediately recognized on sight, and was considered a rare and magnificent find, as this particular ship design was one of legend among the crew of the Enterprise.

Federation Intelligence Files

Captain Galek Sar was the 14th century Promellian commanding officer of the Promellian battle cruiser, Cleponji.

During the battle of Orelious IX, Sar and his crew became trapped in a field of aceton assimilators, where his vessel was rendered powerless. Unable to escape the Menthar booby trap, Sar succumbed to the inevitability of his fate by accepting responsibility for his defeat. He would commend his crew for their bravery and they would together die at their posts from the radiation poisoning.

Sar's ship would be discovered a millennium later by the crew of the USS Enterprise-D. Upon succumbing to the effects of the aceton assimilators themselves, the Enterprise-D crew used Sar'slogs to better understand their situation.

On stardate 43205.6 Captain Picard praised their bridge layout as simple yet elegant and functional. He would later have Worf take tricorder images of the cruiser's tactical display for additional analysis of the vessels form and function.

Visiting a Promellian battle cruiser was always a dream of Picard's, a dream he had held on to ever since he was a child, when he used to build model ships in bottles. Picard had always figured that ships of that era would have a clumsy and awkward bridge layout; however, he was later proven wrong upon visiting the Cleponji.
