"These are excellent examples of our crops and worthy of your interest."
a V'radian sales greeting.
The V'radian are an agrarian species that have overcome a limited availability of industrial quality raw materials to become first a space faring species and then members of the Federation.

History

For most of their history they were an almost strictly agrarian people. The difficulty in gathering certain raw resources seems to have been the main reason for this. Then the discovery of certain deposits allowed a sudden industrial revolution but one that was very limited. Cities started to develop around these deep core mines but even then the availability of certain raw resources hampered any real large scale industrialization.

Over time the mines went deeper, the cities grew bigger and technology advanced, however in most cases most of these advances were never seen out side of the cities as they could not build very many of any new devices, especially if they were a result of high technology.

Advances were slow in some cases and rapid in others depending on the city and the availability of both raw resources and technological devices. Some experts agree that the fact that they were able to develop a space program at all proves that at some point that they had outside assistance as no civilization with such serious restrictions could or would have wasted the amount of time and resources needed otherwise.

Their space program has never been very big and once they did start to build ships they were limited to only a few a year and most of those have always been freighters. This allowed them to slowly develop a series of trade deals with near by species that allowed them to increase their industrial base. Luxury goods became more available as did most technological devices. Now even the small communities could afford to buy devices to make life easier.

Eventually they requested to join the Federation. Debate was spirited and long and eventually they were voted in but it was a very close call with many voting members being concerned that the evident stagnation of their culture and society meant that they were in decline. It was only thanks to the comments of Ambassador Sirok of Vulcan that enough votes were generated for a yes result.

Since becoming a member of the Federation they have been mostly silent members, taking advantage of all the opportunities both economically as well as educational. Their participation in other projects and activities has been mostly sporadic with only a few joining Starfleet and almost none going into the Marines.

Government

The small rural communities have a council of elders but this system does not work as well in the cities so they had to develop a new style of government for them. In this case they have a joint council of elders and highly placed technical experts.

They have no real central government merely a system of co-operation between the few large cities that allows them to trade goods and services as needed. The smaller communities rarely care about what the cities do and worry only about their communities and it's needs.

Description

They have gray skin tones, black hair and a dark reddish colorization around their noses. They have a V like set of raised ridges on their foreheads which are high with the hairline being near the top of their square shaped heads. Females have longer hair and softer features.

Physiology

For a humanoid species they have a highly specialized physiology with numerous complex hormones, enzymes and chemicals. Some aspect of their native atmosphere and the unusual toxins in the air due to their industrialization have resulted in the dark reddish colorization around their noses.

Psychology

As a species they seem to be very well adjusted but they have trouble dealing with stress and the high demands of a industrial, fast paced society. This has been very evident in the breakdown of individuals living in the cities where the turn over rate in many jobs can be very high.

Religion

They have a strong healthy belief in a kind of feminine nature spirit they call V'rid that controls the weather, nature and many other aspects of the world around them. As a result any harvest results in a massive communal celebration that gives thanks to her for the bounty of the harvest. Added to this is the daily devotions in the form of prayer at sun up and sun down. This can take place any where the sun can be seen rising above the horizon or falling behind one.

Mythology

They have numerous tales and legends about V'rid walking among them, watching, learning and influencing them in a positive manner. She seems to be both a watchful and instructive being. All of the legends and tales seem to have a lesson of some kind, a reason for what happened. In the smaller communities these stories have been the driving force for educating their young and ensuring that they as a people can survive.

Society

They have mostly an agrarian way of life with numerous small communities surrounded by farms, orchards and strips of forest. These small communities have a very relaxed way of life, with very little crime, a spirit of co-operation that sees them all working together for the betterment of the community. Over 80% of the total population lives in this manner.

In the few large cities that they have are the limited industrial complex's that transform most of the imported raw resources into goods that they need and luxury goods they can trade for more raw materials. Here things are more rugged, the cities dirty, congested and suffering from a slow breakdown of the social consciousness that makes them who they are. As a result in the cities you have a higher crime rate, poverty, hunger and other social problems totally unheard of in the smaller communities.

Culture

They tend to prefer music, dancing and hand made visual forms of art to all others. Only things created by a person using his own hands that reflect his ideals and certain aspects of nature and the world around them find appreciation from large numbers of them.

Customs

Celebrations that thank V'rid for the bounty she has supplied, births, harvests, marriages, etc. are common and boisterous with lots of music, laughter, dancing and eating.

Technology

Unfortunately they are lagging behind most of the other Federation member worlds, especially when it comes to engineering and advanced technology research. As regards chemistry and biology, in these two fields they have been able to keep up and are even considered able to produce individuals whose training is good enough for them to get jobs on just about any Federation member world out there.

Economy

Their home world is most an agrarian planet with a very small industrial base so they are dependent on many imports and as such they have an economy that while strong can not be considered rich. Over 75% of all luxury goods and over 50% of all foods produced by them are exported in order to be able to balance the cost of importing raw materials that they need to keep their economy going.

Military

At one time they had a fairly strong if small military force that protected their homeworld however since they joined the Federation they have depended on Starfleet for protection and converted their small fleet into a civil defense force that patrols the transportation and cargo lanes with in their sector. Unfortunately nothing has been done to upgrade or seriously maintain this fleet and it is now over 50 years out of date. A few of the ships have been mothballed as they are no longer even remotely considered safe to operate.

Federation Intelligence Files

The V'radians are a humanoid species from inside the section of space that use to be the Delphic Expanse.

An unnamed V'radian was also held captive in the slave market on Verex III.
