Background

Ryan Martin King was born to Arnold and Evelyn King at the Cestus III colony.

The King family’s history on Cestus III began as part of a wave of migrants to the planet following the first Gorn invasion and subsequent repopulation in 2271. Originally from Earth, the King family quickly developed their reputation as leaders in the small business community, becoming the first sonic shower installation business in the sector.

Upon Ryan’s birth in 2361 the family had become influential leaders on the planet and with their comparative wealth enjoyed a comfortable existence. However, with the family’s success came limited horizons. From a young age Ryan was tasked with doing well in his studies, but never to think differently. He spent the quiet years of childhood and adolescence alone, exploring some, but mostly spending time reading. He especially cherished children’s mystery books and books on history.

Early adolescence brought change however. With the start of the Dominion War, Ryan, at age 11, soon found his young mind confronted by the dark issues that war brought: fear, famine, destruction and loss.

These years (2373 – 2375) shaped young Ryan King. He begged his mother to allow him to go to Starfleet rallies. These rallies exposed him to the patriotism and xenophobia of the times. He watched enlisted men and women leave Cestus for service in Starfleet and knew they were leaving to protect him. He knew that he wanted to be like them, he wanted to protect others.

The year 2377 brought another change to his family. The post-war years saw a population boom throughout the Federation and on Cestus III the family of Arnold and Evelyn King welcomed a daughter, Jamie to the family, much to the irritation of the fifteen-year-old.

By 2380, much of Ryan’s childish spark had waned. Distracted by the concerns of early adulthood and a peacetime Federation, he finished his primary education with below average grades and joined his father in the family business on Cestus III.

In late 2385, Ryan left Cestus III for the first time in his life, choosing to take his Academy courses on Earth. At the Academy, Ryan was not a gifted student but he earned a respectable grade point average and settled on Security and Tactical studies. He viewed the disciplines as a proper balance of physical strength and practical intellect. He also knew at that point that he hated mathematics.

Personality Traits

Friends and colleagues describe Ryan as ambitious, warm, sometimes dark and very impatient. He often states his point of view succinctly and can be blunt to the point of impolite with those he is uncomfortable around. Ryan is prone to having ideas to solve problems, but often gets hung up on the minor details. His superior officers sometimes find it necessary to channel that energy to more useful purposes. He is meticulous and is known to take far too much time on a project in an effort to make the end product perfect.
