"Any day you wake up and you’re not covered in dirt is a good day to be alive."
a Bringloidi proverb.
The Bringloidi are a group of Human colonists mostly from Ireland who were adherents of Neo-Transcendentalism, a philosophy which advocated a return to a simpler, nature-based way of life.

History

The original Bringloidi were largely of Irish descent, and adherents of Neo-Transcendentalism, a philosophy which advocated a return to a simpler, nature-based way of life. They left Earth in 2123 aboard the SS Mariposa, along with another group of colonists, who would later settle the planet Mariposa. The Bringloidi were dropped off on a planet that would become known as Bringloid V. Both colonies were subsequently forgotten in the chaos of the period as all records were lost in the chaos of the early 22nd century.

By the mid-24th century, their star had become increasingly active, affecting the climate of Bringloid V, eventually forcing the Bringloidi to abandon their farms and take shelter in caves.

In 2365, the solar flares from there sun which had been endangering the planet for years, reached a peak, triggering an automated distress call from an orbiting satellite which alerted Starfleet to the colony's existence. The USS Enterprise-D was dispatched to investigate and after rediscovereing the forgotten colony had to evacuated the entire Bringlodi population, all 223 of them from the endangered planet.

The Bringloidi leader Danilo Odell then helped Captain Jean-Luc Picard to locate the likewise lost Mariposan colony.

When it was learned that the Mariposans, who had resorted to cloning centuries earlier, were facing a severe population decrease, it was agreed that the Bringloidi would reunite with the Mariposans and merge their two societies on Mariposa. To be viable, both groups gave up monogamous marriage, requiring that each female bear three children by three men.

The united society took the name of the United Ficus Colony, and was headed by both a Mariposan and a Bringloidi Prime Minister. Danilo Odell held the position of Bringloidi Prime Minister until his death sometime before 2376, following the end of the Dominion War, and he was succeeded by his daughter, Brenna. However, the two groups remained distinct form one another, and endured a significant degree of strain during the first decade following reunion.

In 2367 the Dieghanists, a sub-group of diehard fundamentalist separated and established their own community. They have limited contact with the other Bringloidi and tend to completely avoid any contact with the Mariposans.

In late 2376, the Alliance for Mariposan Primacy, led by James Hammond, launched a brief coup d'état, following an unrelated release of a genetically engineered virus in the colony's Life Sciences Center. The coup was put down with the assistance of the USS da Vinci.

Over the 25 plus years since then they have slowly started to accept that in order to survive they have no choice but to mate with members of the Bringloidi. As a result most of their young adults are now the product of intermarriage between their two cultures.

Government

In 2365 the Mariposan government was restructured to formally become the United Ficus Colony, headed by both a Mariposan and a Bringloidi Prime Minister. However, the two groups remained distinct from one another, and endured a significant degree of strain during the first decade following reunion. As of 2376, those leaders were, respectively, Brenna Odell and Wilson Granger.

Since then they have learned to live together in harmony but still maintain separate governments. This is more so due to the fact that the majority of Bringloidi still adhere to their pre-technological agricultural way of life while the Mariposans and most of their off spring tend to be highly motivated engineers and scientists.

Dieghanists

The Dieghanists was a sociopolitical group formed on planet Mariposa in 2367, after the Bringloidi people were rejoined with the Mariposans. Named after Liam Dieghan, the Dieghanists considered themselves the defenders of the Neo-Transcendentalism movement he had started, and separated themselves from the technology-dependent colony. The Dieghanists differed from their predecessors by portraying Nature as a punishing force which would take vengeance on their opponents with disasters such as storms, floods, quakes, and plagues.

Description

Since they are the descendants of Irish colonists from the planet Earth it is no wonder that these humans have retained most of the characteristics native to the Irish. And since they have maintained a fundamentalist way of life even the way they dress and manufacture their own clothes is reminiscent of the styles and look of the pre-world war III Irish.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

To be viable genetically, both groups gave up monogamous marriage, requiring that each female bear three children by three men. It is in this way that they hope to not only increase their overall population but reduce the possibility of genetic degradation while improving the genetic DNA pool.

Psychology

Since they are largely of Irish descent, and adherents of Neo-Transcendentalism, a philosophy which advocates a return to a simpler, nature-based way of life the Bringloidi tend to favor simple homemade tools and machinery that requires very little technology in order to function. They also have a tendency to enjoy a few glasses of Poteen at the end of every work day.

Surprisingly they seem to have very few mental health issues and the few that they do have are generally those having to do with aging or that are caused by overindulgence in their favorite drink Poteen.

Religion

They brought their religious beliefs with them when they left Earth and they have managed to keep them alive all of this time. As a result almost all of the Bringloidi are faithful believers in the Roman Catholic Church. Now admittedly many of the traditions, services and formalities have been lost or abandoned but not the beliefs.

Mythology

As with all the Irish they have a surprisingly rich and diverse collection of myths, tales and legends that cover a wide range of topics, beings and times. From leprechauns to fairies, from the banshees wail to the Celtic heroes and gods, almost all of it has been saved and enjoyed as entertaining tales of Irish folklore.

Society

For the most part their communities are well laid out and built in the traditional Irish manner. Everything is done by hand using simplistic tools and machinery. People work together, helping each other to get things done and most products and services still exchange hands as a result of bartering. They are friendly and hardworking. Only when it comes to their medical facilities is there a profusion of advanced technological equipment and devices.

Culture

While they can and do appreciate many different forms of artistic expression the one that they enjoy the most is music. For them this is mostly the traditional Irish folk music that they brought with them from Earth.

Customs

They retain a number of interesting customs from their Irish heritage. One of the most interesting is called the Gathering. This is when a large group of them will gather to celebrate something. This could be a wedding, funeral, harvest, childbirth or some other happy occurrence. At this time they will sing, play music and consume vast amounts of poteen and good food as well as dancing and other harmless forms of general good humored antics.

Technology

For the most part most Bringloidi tend to live the simplistic lives of farmers, herders and craftmen. Most of them have no interest in learning any complicated new types of technology but are willing to accept the benefits when it comes to medicine, their livestock and most importantly the distillation and creation of the alcoholic drink poteen.

Economy

It is only in the last 15 years or so that they have been able to establish trade with other species and worlds. For the most part this involves them making deals with merchants, traders and freighter captains from these other species as they have not yet built any freighters of their own.

Poteen

It is also known as potcheen or poitin and is a triple distilled grain spirit made from malted barley grain or potatoes. It is an alcoholic beverage that originated from the traditional Irish culture on Earth. It was a whiskey made and highly popular with Bringloidi men.

Since merging with the Mariposans they have adopted the use of advanced technological distilling machines to produce a stronger, more enjoyable, richer tasting version of poteen. As a result it is now their most profitable export.

Military

They have no military but since the attempted coup d'état by the Alliance for Mariposan Primacy in 2376 they have formed a joint police force that serves to maintain order and protect the colonists from both groups. This police force uses a partnership system where every Mariposan officer is paired off with a Bringloidi officer.

Federation Intelligence Files

The Bringloidi were a group of primarily Irish descent, who left Earth as part of the Neo-Transcendentalist movement that followed World War III and First Contact. Despite their rejection of technology, the colony prospered due to the Bringloidi's use of traditional techniques for providing their own textiles and food.

In 2365, the Bringloidi, led by Danilo Odell, were forced to evacuate aboard the USS Enterprise-D due to increased solar flare activity in their star system. At Captain Jean-Luc Picard's suggestion, they eventually merged with the clone-based society of the Mariposans, also descended from those on the Mariposa.

In 2377, Quark travelled from Deep Space 9 to Ferenginar aboard a crowded transport ship. While on board this vessel a Bringloidi vomited on him.
