"For clan and honour. Krahan! Krahan!"
a Rasiinian saying.
The Rasiinian are a humanoid species which while still divided into numerous individual little political and spiritual clans have managed to avoid any true internal conflict and replaced this aggressive outlet with the sport of Krahan.

History

Long ago, when they lived in small groups they started to compete and fight with one another for the best hunting grounds and farming areas. As time passed the groups grew bigger but the infighting continued. This is the origin of the family as an individual political entity with everyone being related with in a group, working together and fighting to protect what they had from other families.

Over time these families became larger and evolved into the current clan system with them controlling entire regions with cities, towns, villages and all of the resources with in those areas under their control. Border conflicts were semi-constant and numerous small wars were fought. This continued for more than 2,500 years until the advance of technology made warfare less of a sport and more of a danger to their continued existence.

A few of the more progressively minded clans realized that continued conflict with their new advanced weaponry could result in massive casualties, atrocities and possible planetary damage. They banded together and came to an agreement that would eventually result in the creation of the council.

They approached other clans. Some found the idea intriguing and joined while others refused. Those clans that refused were destroyed, every single individual including women and children were eliminated. With this as an incentive fewer and fewer clans declined and after lengthy negotiations joined the council.

This was by no means a quick fix to their problems but after almost 500 years of struggle, strife, constant back stabbing and arguing they had a unified planetary wide government which guaranteed that each clan received the same, equal representation.

As a result of this new co-operation between them a new system was evolved to replace warfare as a means of solving border disputes or any other inter-clan squabbles.

Eventually they developed the technology to allow them to explore space. At first it was merely a hobby of the more powerful, wealthier clans. Another way to compete among themselves to prove which one of them was the best. However when they discovered the existence of other species it changed everything.

Their was much debate on the council and numerous radical ideas of how to deal with this new information. In the end they selected to observe and put more effort into technology that they could use to defend themselves with if the need arose. Eventually they built warships and only then did they continue to explore the universe around them.

Finding a number of planets capable of sustaining life they established colonies, made contact with other species and in the process fought a few small wars, coming out of them slightly better off than they went into them.

In 2336 the Borg attacked and assimilated their largest colony on Tivila V. Over 1.8 million people were lost.

During the Dominion War they lost two more colonies to attack by the Breen and to the Jem’hadar.

Government

They have a council made up of 133 individuals who represent the 133 different clans. Each clan selects their own representative and the process used may differ greatly from clan to clan.

Description

characterized by wrinkled blue skin and a bony exoskeleton covering their face.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

Psychology

While not true xenophobes they do tend to not trust most other species and even those they have constant contact with are always watched in case they try to pull a fast one on them. This inability to trust anyone not from their own clan can also affect their ability to work with others of their own species.

Religion

Over time their different beliefs have slowly merged together to form a single planet wide union with a pantheon of gods and goddesses, one for each and every clan. In fact the symbol of each clan is a reflection of their own clan god or goddess.

Mythology

There are numerous tales, myths and legends with most of them involving the various different gods and goddesses that they believe in. However every clan has their own interpretation of each and every myth with their own personal clam god or goddess being portrayed in the best light and all the others coming off as a pale watered down version of their own.

Society

Each clan controls and rules its own lands, cities and resources. As a result each clan area will reflect the beliefs and competency of their leaders.

While Krahan was originally created as a means of solving clan disputes with out having to resort to active warfare it has long since evolved into the sporting craze that it currently is. Games are broadcast world wide and beamed off world to all of their colonies.

Culture

While they enjoy music and most other forms of artistic expression it is the sport of Krahan that truly captures everyone’s interest. Each and every clan has at least one team and some of the larger, more prosperous clans may have as many as 5 or 6.

Each team has 133 players dressed in protective gear and carrying a 6’ staff with the last 2’ on both ends being padded. This is a very physical sport and injuries are not uncommon with broken bones and other tissue damage. In some cases this will result in a fatality.

They play on a large field that has a large number of obstacles. These obstacles come in a variety of shapes, composition and sizes and no two fields are ever the same. The object of the game is to break through the other team’s guards and capture the other team’s flag, a staff with the emblem of the clan fixed to the top of it.

Customs

At the age of majority each and every single citizen has the symbol of their clan burned into both forearms. This marks them for life as a member of their clan.

The greatest punishment any one of them can suffer is to be banished from their clan. This involves burning their clan brand permanently off of both forearms and then shipping them off world.

Technology

While not as advanced as the Federation they do spend a lot on research and are not adverse to trading for new technology or buying it from any source regardless of the legalities involved in the deal.

Economy

They have developed a number of long term trade partners and are always looking for more. As a result they have a fairly adequate quality of life but know that it could be improved.

Military

Each clan has their own troops and war ships. In the past they would have been used as part of the constant infighting between the different families. Those days are now a long distant memory.

Now each of the larger clans is required by law to maintain 1 heavy cruiser and 2 destroyers while the smaller clans are required by law to maintain 1 light cruiser and 2 frigates. The cost of building, maintain and outfitting each ship as well as the training of its crew must be paid for by the clan to whom the vessel belongs. However only the clan to which the vessel belongs may decide in what way the ship will be used.

Federation Intelligence Files

In 2372, Ambassador Runepp traveled to Deep Space 9 aboard a Bajoran transport. The mysterious Onaya also came to the station aboard the vessel.

The Borg had encountered and assimilated Rasiinians prior to 2373, as indicated by the image of one which would later appear during one of Seven of Nine's guilt-induced hallucinations.
