History

As a species they have a fairly tranquil history with no major wars, social upheavals or disasters. They progressed at a fairly even pace and worked together to ensure that all of the people benefited from all their technological advances and raw resources.

Even their eventual progression into a space faring species went forward with only minimal difficulty. Everything seemed to be going well with the discovery of other alien species. They claimed a few worlds and started up colonies. Then disaster struck.

Paraagan II was a planet in the Sentera star system visited in early 2152 by the Enterprise NX-01. The planet had a Paraagan mining colony and was named as it was to reflect its position as their 2nd colony. When the colony started in 2132 there were thirty miners; by 2152 there were 3,600 colonists, plus schools, landscaped communities, and a museum. The colonists were somewhat nonconformist by Paraagan standards, eschewing most of the ceremonies of mainstream society.

The atmosphere of the colony planet contained a large amount of tetrazine that reacted poorly with plasma. When the Enterprise shuttlepod approached the planet, the atmosphere was ignited and all the Paraagan colonists were killed.

It was later determined that the cause was a device planted by a Suliban stealth-cruiser that caused the released plasma. The Suliban Cabal were believed to have caused the destruction of Paraagan II to stop the mission of the Enterprise by besmirching its name, thereby gaining an advantage in the Temporal Cold War.

This was their first real experience with the dangers associated with both space travel and contact with alien species. It provoked a mad rush to arm and build defenses to protect their other colonies.

They also reduced their contact with all other species for more than a decade. This ended after a yearlong debate within their government. They saw the creation of the Federation and it’s slow steady growth as a possible safe haven. After all the humans had proven themselves to be truthful and there was safety in numbers. As a result they contacted the Federation and requested to be allowed to join. After a short debate they were voted in.

Using terraforming technology lent to them by the Federation they were eventually able to reclaim Paraagan II and resettle a colony on the planet. In honor of those who died there a huge statue was erected in the center of what has grown to be their largest city.

Government

Previously, the Paraagans had been a matriarchal society, one where every government position was held by a woman. This changed in the 2140s when the males made great strides toward equal rights. Now they have equal rights and a large representation with in their government. A government that has also changed with time to better serve the people.

Description

The Paraagan people are a humanoid race with a similar appearance to Human's. This includes the possibilities for many different body shapes, height, weight and other outward cosmetic differences. Paraagans do differ from humans in one way, a different cranial structure, with higher foreheads.

Physiology

For a humanoid species they have a highly specialized physiology with numerous complex hormones, enzymes and chemicals. This is another way in which they faintly resemble humans although many of the hormones, chemicals and enzymes as well as internal organs do differ.

Psychology

As a species they have a complex mental makeup, one that seems to be fairly resilient as they have a greatly reduced frequency of mental illness. The down side to this is that when one of their people does develop some form of mental illness it tends to progress rather quickly.

Religion

Death is a focal point in their religious beliefs. It is essential that the physical remains undergo a number of important and ritualistic ceremonies prior to the final ceremony of release.

Mythology

They have a complex mythology that is interwoven into their religious beliefs regarding death, rebirth and the many challenges that must be faced before one can be reborn.

Society

They have a strong, sense of who they are. As a species they tend to work together to improve the overall quality of life for all of their citizens. As a result they have a very low crime rate, well developed educational and medical system.

Culture

While they have their own well-developed forms of arts and music they have slowly adopted and incorporated various aspects of other cultures art and music into their won. This has resulted in the hybrid creation of a few new types of music and a overall appreciation for all types of art and music.

Customs

They are a very ceremonial race; their funeral customs depend on the existence of remains. However due to the catastrophe on Paraagan II not all of the colonists were accounted for. It is for this reason that when they resettled this planet that the first thing they did was to erect a massive statue in memory of those who were lost.

Technology

The Paraagan Science Council is the leading scientific body of the Paraagan people. All of their most accomplished, educated and respected scientists are members. As a result they have been able to establish themselves as a respected and valued part of the Federations overall scientific community.

Economy

Over time they have developed a fairly strong trade system. One that is interwoven completely into the fabric of the Federation’s system of interstellar commerce, as a result they are an important factor in the economic stability in their section of the Federation.

Military

They never really developed a need for any real kind of military forces. They did have a well-trained civil police force that worked to keep the peace and ensure the safety of the population as a whole.

However after the destruction of their colony on Paraagan II that changed. They shifted their scientific research over to weapons and defensive systems. They also established a fledgling military that was charged with protecting the colonies. Soon they started work on extensive defensive and early warning systems to provide protection to their colonies.

After they were granted admission to the Federation they slowly disbanded their military and incorporated them into their police force. This greatly increased the effectiveness of that force. At the same time they kept all planetary defense systems active and have continued to upgrade and add on to these systems as needed.

Federation Intelligence Files

A firm supporter of the Federation since they were voted in they consistently have been active in scientific and humanitarian activities.

Future Temporal Possibilities

As part of one of the possible future timelines, in the 24th century a Doctor Naadri of the Paraagan Science Council will consult with the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations.
