Personal History

Toja is the son of Drs. Rozal Loren and Marika Tiro, both computer science researchers from the Trill Science Ministry on long-term assignment to Betazed for cooperative research into telepathic computer interfaces.

A non-telepath growing up among a telepathic race such as the Betazoids presented a unique challenge for Toja. The decreased mental and emotional control that he possessed compared to his peers tended to cause friction and conflict between himself and the Betazoid children with whom he had contact. When he was seven years of age, he witnessed the Dominion invasion of Betazed and life under enemy occupation, most notably the effects on his sister, two years his junior. Witnessing these events during his formative years significantly altered Toja's view of the world, but also served as the foundation for the direction his life would take. The emotional trauma of the Dominion occupation caused him to withdraw, sparking episodes of significant emotional outbursts - unnerving and upsetting to his telepathically sensitive classmates. These issues were largely resolved over time through the help of individual and family counseling.

At age twelve, Toja was introduced to martial arts as a way to focus his mind and emotional state. He began to study two styles originating from ancient Earth: Judo and aikido. He took to these studies with tenacity and passion, and soon came to rely on practice and meditation to maintain emotional control. This exposure significantly guided the development of Toja's adult personality.

His academic fascination tended toward military studies, considered a strange subject of study on Betazed, a culture with no real emphasis on military might or capability. It was assumed that this was an outgrowth of his experiences earlier in life. After completing secondary school at age 17, he began a work-study program sponsored by the Trill Science Ministry, studying computer science theory under his parents as a precursor to seeking admittance to the Trill Symbiosis Institute as a host initiate for joining, largely at the urging of his mother, herself a joined Trill. After ten months in the program, he voluntarily terminated his work-study program, instead applying to Starfleet Academy. This decision caused some friction within his family, as it was hoped that he would follow in his mother's footsteps and become joined. This discontent with his career choice was later compounded by his younger sister being accepted as a host initiate.

At the Academy, Toja majored in Military Studies with a minor in astrophysics. Academically, he performed well, completing his studies in the top twenty percent of his graduating class.

Psychological Profile

Emotionally, Toja is very reserved and can appear outwardly muted and disinterested. His emotions caused such problems with his peers throughout his formative years that he all but shuns them in most cases. Do not confuse his emotional withdrawl with emotional control or absence, as he is still very much an emotional being. Rather, he is uncomfortable feeling those emotions or expressing them out of a concern for how they might affect others.

As a result of his emotional difficulties, Toja still has issues connecting with others on an emotional or social level. Growing up among the occasionally offensively honest society of Betazed, he lacks a fine understanding of social and conversational graces. It is not uncommon for him to make a truthful statement or observation with such force or directness that it comes across as rude or callous. He is very adept at observing the emotional states of others through both verbal and nonverbal cues, but he lacks skill in using that awareness toward a positive outcome.

Despite these issues, Toja is very stable, emotionally. By virtue of his practiced focus and meditative habits, he is adept at compartmentalizing his emotional state and setting it aside when circumstances require. This ability to focus has lended well to his studies at the Academy, and serves well to help him keep a level head during stressful situations. Further counseling may be advised should issues arise, but nothing noted in this report should preclude his unrestricted service in Starfleet.
