While assigned to the USS Hermes, Marlené and her crewmates were captured by a Mirror Universe force seeking a way to stabilize a interdimensional portal. Many crewmembers were murdered and the rest were enslaved. Marlené was singled-out by Seca Lekvar, her own doppledanger, and beaten savagely in an attempt to lure her younger sister, a academic specialist in theoretical physics. Victoria did in-fact rescued Marlené and killed her doppledanger in the process. The savage treatment inflicted extreme physical damage to Marlené, specifically hardest of all were the nearly pulverized and shattered joints in arms and knees, legs and ankles. Equally hard for her to bear is that she was rescued - she still wishes that she was never rescued by Victoria and that she could've died rather than live with the consequences of her brutal enslavement.
