Edward Kane (Father) - Lt Commander, currently assigned to a research project in San Francisco. Formerly served on [[Deep Space 17]] and was injured escaping during the [[Vaadwaur]] attack on 238706.16. Divorced. His relationship with his father is good, however it could almost be considered more professional than personal.

Susan Isaac (Mother) - Florist currently living in London. Divorced. Alex is close to his mother, though finds her overly protective to the point of annoyance at times.

Alex was born in London, Earth, on 237702.14. His father, Edward Kane, was a Lieutenant in Starfleet, stationed as part of a research team on Earth. His mother, Susan Kane, ran a humble flower shop in London. His early childhood was spent in the city, which was honestly pretty mundane and typical for a Terran.

Early in 2386, Susan's mother was diagnosed with Iverson's Disease. Approximately a week after the diagnosis, Edward was promoted to Lt. Commander and ordered to report to [[Deep Space 17]] to help with research on the neutron star [[Eratis]]. On 238604.06, [[Deep Space 17]] was bombed in an unprovoked attack, and Edward was badly injured. Susan demanded that Edward resign from Starfleet and return home. The stress of both her mother's illness and her husband's being so far away in a potentially dangerous situation was too much for Susan to bear. Though Edward and Susan tried for months to work through the situation, they divorced, and Susan maintained custody of Alex.

On 238706.16, [[Deep Space 17]] was captured by the [[Vaadwaur]]. Edward was severely injured, but managed to escape, returning to Earth. Upon his return, Edward tried to reconcile with Susan, but the effort only made their relationship more strained. It was all very visible to Alex, and he had a hard time truly understanding it.

After recovering from his injuries, Edward was assigned to a research project in San Francisco. Alex spent the remainder of his childhood equally with both his parents. The time he spent with his father caused his interest in Starfleet, as well as science, to grow. He found a drive to join Starfleet as well as a desire to make his father proud. His mother was very hesitant and disapproving of Alex's decision to join Starfleet; however, she did her best to not be discouraging.
