+Having been in and out of hospitals almost constantly since his childhood, it was a surprise to Dirk's parents when he expressed a desire to study Paramedic Science at University, aged 18. By 21, Dirk had graduated and landed a job with the New Illaran Ambulance Service, a team of skilled responders created to aid the lives of people who couldn't get themselves to hospital.
+After a short tenure with the NIAS, Dirk found himself longing for more adventure in his life. It was at this point that he learned of the Federation presence at Deep Space 26, and quickly applied for a position as a trauma nurse in the hospital there.
+Serving with distinction for a number of years, Dirk garnered the trust and ear of the Chief Medical Officer on board, who encouraged Dirk to make a formal request to Starfleet Medical, asking that he be allowed to attend the academy to earn his commission as a trauma surgeon in Starfleet. The request was received, approved, and after 4 years living on the station, Dirk found himself moving to Earth. The furthest from his familial home he would ever go to date.
+Dirk graduated from the Academy with a major in Major Trauma Care and a minor in, again, Paramedic Science, and immediately put a request to serve on the team at DS26. It had been his home for many years, and being Illaran, he had a strong connection with the region. While Starfleet Medical wrestled with the decision, as trauma care was needed elsewhere, eventually his pleas were heard, and Dirk secured a position as a Trauma Surgeon back at DS26.
+For 7 years, Dirk worked with tireless dedication to saving people's lives, especially while the station was missing in the subspace realm. Upon hearing word that the Atlantis was dealing with a planet-wide quarantine, he knew that was his next calling.
+After filing for a brief leave of absence, Dirk bartered his way onto a passing Romulan Shuttle, equipped with a cloaking device, able to bypass the Valcarian quarantine perimeter undetected. It was at the main hospital in the capital city, Keibrom, where he met the Atlantis crew for the first time.
