Immediately following his arrival on the USS Columbia, the ship was dispatched to the Skalur Expanse to investigate some unprecedented ecological changes on the planet Hemix. In support of Operation Knifepoint, the crew was given a secondary objective: to investigate a rumored Sicarius connection to pirates operating in the area. During the 17 day trip to Hemix, Kelly worked his security forces hard, running several shipwide drills that simulated an attack by a hostile boarding party. While the extra training provided the Columbia's new Chief of Security with a bit of peace of mind, others found the interruptions less pleasant.

Upon arrival at Hemix, two teams were formed to fulfill each of the objectives. A science team to investigate the ecological oddity of the Hemix island led by LtCmdr. Rennyn and a more combat oriented team that was tasked with investigating the pirate threat led by Tyler Kelly. Immediately after beaming down, Kelly's team discovered a strange energy field that seemed to feed off the energy of their communications equipment, cutting off their contact with the Columbia. Proceeding with the mission despite their comm. difficulties, the Intelligence team encountered a swarm of red moths that after being attracted by a phaser blast, enveloped P02 Clay Lewis and killed him by draining all of the molecular energy from his body. As they attempted to escape from the vampiric moths, Kelly's team was surrounded by a vicious gang of pirates led by a Bolian female named Chennel. Meanwhile, Captain Nugra, who had been a part of the Intelligence Team was overcome by the forces of the island and his mind entered and altered state of primal Gorn rage and he dissappeared into the jungle. With an improvised flashbang device made out of a EV Suits power pack, Kelly and the rest of the team managed to evade the pirates and escape the jungle to set up temporary camp in a clearing at the base of the islands central volcano. Unfortunately Nugra, still in his bloodthirsty state, had been hunting them the entire time. Having singled out Kelly as the leader and primary target, he ambushed them, aiming for a killing blow. It was only by the brave and remarkably foolish actions of Ensign Mirra Ezo that he survived, as she put herself in the path of the charging Gorn and took the brunt of his brutal attack. Nugra recovered quickly and resumed his assault on Kelly, leaving him with serious facial lacerations, a broken jaw, concussion and several broken ribs before being put down by a Maximum-power Stun shot from Lt. Theo Whitaker. In the midst of the chaos the pirate's vessel locked on to the commotion and beamed them aboard, once again taking them prisoner.

When Kelly finally woke up, he found himself in the disgusting sickbay of the pirate ship "Lightness of Being" with Mirra Ezo resetting his broken jaw by hand with no anesthetic. Ezo used the meager provisions available to her in the filthy sickbay to stabilize his various injuries, including the expired and contaminated dermal regeneration cream that resulted in their scars being permanent. Unsteady, and only able to communicate with Ezo telepathically, Tyler was forced to kill the guard assigned to them with a archaic rusty old  bonesaw when the pirate attempted to harm her.
