# '''232001.01''': Event.
Derovan had a relatively comfortable childhood as the son of a brilliant medical researcher, and the adopted son of a highly respected politician. As a teenager, Derovan qualified as a candidate for ValakiStar, a program set up to identify and develop young Valakians with the aptitude and talent to become Starfleet officers. With a natural talent for mathematics, Derovan achieved the standards necessary to apply for Starfleet, and was accepted into the Academy upon graduation from Valakis Secondary Institute.
# '''232001.02''': Event, etc.

As the Valakian population only numbered in the hundreds of thousands, the Valakian population is subject to the fear that their voices would be lost within the Federation's multitude of planets and species. ValakiStar was implemented to send as many Valakians as possible into StarFleet, thereby exerting some influence on the Federation through the political connections developed therein. Although many Valakian youths have qualified for the program academically, only a small number have been able to apply for Starfleet. The major barrier is psychological. Valakians, as well as their distant cousins Menk, have a deep-seated aversion to violence. And while Starfleet accomodates pacifist species with research postings and other “safe” listings, the most important and influential positions must entail the potential for violence. Very few Valakians feel comfortable even contemplating this potential. Derovan is an exception in this regard, and was selected over several arguably better qualified candidates for his relative psychopathology. Even with this “sadistic” streak Derovan is highly averse to violence, and would be considered a pacifist in most parts of the galaxy.

As a Starfleet cadet, Derovan's career was relatively average, although he did achieve notably high marks in cryptography and comparative ethics. During his time in the Academy, he became fond of the Terran sport of handball, and is an avid player.

Federation psychological profiling indicates that Cadet Saalik harbors some ambivalence towards StarFleet and its approach to . Cadet Saalik openly admits these concerns, and is willing to engage in debate and conversation as to their veracity. Starfleet Psychological classifies him as either a 'complainant' or 'reformist' personality rather than the more troublesome 'insurrectionary' personality type. He is not seen as a security risk at this point in time.

Cadet Saalik's biological father Razajon Zenis is the subject of a thick folder within the files of the Valakis Security Bureau. He is considered “harmless though troublesome” by local law enforcement agencies.
