This actually seems a bit misleading to me, since canon establishes in the first few episodes of Voyager that what ends up being the mess hall is actually the Captain's private dining room. Seems ridiculous that such a small ship would have such a big dining room (and it's a science vessel -- who would the CO be entertaining?), but I question whether we should really call this the Mess Hall as if it were standard.

... unless the idea is that once Voyager returned, everyone saw how ridiculous it was to use this room as one person's playground, and said it would increase the quality of life for everyone to just designate it a mess hall ;)  I don't know, what does everyone else think? --[[User:FltAdml. : I don't see how it could ever have been a private dining room, unless the captain really ate quite a lot! I think it'd probably work more like a lounge/mess hall area. Would lounge be a more fitting designation? Most ships tend to have one, and it's certainly painted as an ideal space for the crew to gather in the Voyager TV series. ::: It's either in the pilot or the second episode when Neelix joins the crew permanently that he commandeers the area, and Janeway throws a little hissy fit and acts kinda incredulous that he would want to take away her private dining room. It's pretty clear in the show. The interesting thing is that we don't actually see another lounge or mess hall in the show, which makes you question -- if this is the only place like this on the ship, what the hell would everyone else have done on a normal voyage? --[[User:FltAdml. :::::You're not wrong - the DS9 episode is Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges, and it takes place while Voyager is still lost in the Delta Quadrant. They use the mess hall set for a meeting between the various dignitaries who are headed to Romulus, which could have been a function that required the Captain's dining room, but still doesn't explain the need for a kitchen!
