The Mirror universe is a parallel universe, named so because many places and people that exist in the Prime universe also exist in the Mirror universe, although in a distorted way. The first verifiable contact between the Prime and Mirror universes occured in 2267. Over the centuries, much of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants of the Mirror universe galaxy was ruled over by the Terran Empire, but after its collapse in the late 23rd and early 24th centuries, new factions such as the Betazed Empire, the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance and the Terran Resistance have emerged.

Starfleet Command has classified all information concerning the Mirror universe. While the existance and the general nature of the Mirror universe is a common rumour among Starfleet personnel,[1][2] the more detailed history, political situation and routes to the Mirror universe have remained a secret. Starfleet and the Federation have only limited information about the Mirror universe, relying on reports on the rare cases of crossings between the universes. Starfleet interaction with the Mirror universe is governed by the Protocol Parallax, a priority operational directive secret to all but the highest level of Starfleet.

History

The emblem of the Terran Empire.

The first confirmed contact between the universes happened in 2267, when officers from the USS Enterprise and the Terran Empire ship ISS Enterprise crossed to the other universes due to a transporter malfunction. This was the first time Starfleet learnt about the existance of the Mirror universe.[3][2] While earlier crossings between the universes are possible, none have been proven.

Some time after the 2267 crossing, the Terran Empire was taken over by Emperor Spock following a revolution. Inspired by ideas he had learnt from the Prime universe officers, Emperor Spock initiated a series of reforms to the Terran Empire. However, these reforms weakened the Terran Empire, leading to its collapse at the hands of the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance in the early 24th century. The area of the Empire was shattered and fought over by emerging powers, such as the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, Betazed Empire and the Terran Resistance. Many Terrans were enslaved.[3][4][5]

In 2370s, a series of crossings occured on Deep Space 9. The crew of Deep Space 9 were coerced to aid the Terran Resistance, including aiding them to build a Defiant class ship.[3] Since then, the crossings have been sporadic. Notable crossings include the 2381 crossing by the USS Constitution-B, USS Eagle's encounter with a Terran Resistance ship in 2385 and the 2400 crossing by the Amity Outpost crew.

Factions

Betazed Empire

Main article: Betazed (mirror)

Betazed Empire is a totalitarian empire ruled by an Empress, who holds the title of Mother Eternal. The Empire is expansionist, engaging in war with the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance and possessing areas even in the Delta Quadrant, most importantly Outpost Supremacy in orbit of colonial world Kirilow.[4][5][6]

Betazed was occupied by the Terran Empire in the 2250s.[2] After the Terran Empire fell, the Mirror universe equivalents to the Houses of Betazed united and turned Betazed into an empire.[5]

Klingon-Cardassian Alliance

The Klingong-Cardassian Alliance, ruled by a Regent, is a union of Mirror universe Klingons and Cardassians, with minor partners such as Bajorans. It was the Alliance that ultimately destroyed the Terran Empire, taking over many of its possessions in the Alpha and Beta quadrants. Thanks to the quantum slipstream drive, they also had fleet operations in the Delta quadrant. Their ships equip both phasers and disruptors, and have cloaking capabilities.[7][8][9]

Terran Resistance

Terran Resistance, organized as Terran Resistance Forces, is an armed group formed of different cells. After the fall of the Terran Empire and the enslavement of many Terrans, some Terrans continued to fight against the emerging empires. They formed the Resistance on the Klingon-Cardassian controlled Terok Nor in the 2370s, and thanks to the technology acquired from the Prime universe, including the schematics of a Defiant class ship, they were able to efficiently fight against the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance.[10][11]
