Home World

Illyria faced an environmental cataclysm that affected life on a genetic level, slowly making the planet uninhabitable. Contacted by the Vulcans, the Illyrians were subjected to genetic engineering. The modified Illyrians devolved into savage creatures that ruined the planet, though a minority who retained their intelligence managed to flee and colonize other worlds[1].

History

The Illyrians were first encountered in 2154 when an early Starfleet vessel required repairs following the battle of Azati Prime; an Illyrian starship, disabled by an anomaly field, assisted. However the Starfleet crew required a warp coil, which the Illyrians were not willing to trade as without it, their journey home would take three years. The Starfleet crew and several MACOs boarded the Illyrian craft and took the coil by force. The Illyrian craft was left stranded.

Due to the ban on genetic augmentations in the United Federation of Planets in the 23rd century, they were considered outcasts in the Federation. Illyrians could not join the Federation or Starfleet, and there was a directive against mixing Human and Illyrian blood. The Federation also banned the use of any Illyrian medical technology.

Description

Illyrians are avid practitioners of genetic engineering; they believe in adapting their bodies to the new planets they settle, rather than changing the planet to suit themselves. As a result, Illyrians vary widely in appearance as well as in capabilities. Some Illyrians are externally indistinguishable from Humans, while others exhibit various traits such as cranial ridges, webbed hands, pointed ears, and differently structured eyes.

Physiology

Some Illyrians are modified with enhanced strength and an immune system that can burn out infectious agents from the body rather than rely on antibodies[2].

Illyrians can often be described as (generally) vegetarian, pacifist and non-predatory[3]

Starfleet Intelligence Files

In 2259, Starfleet Commander Una Chin-Riley, a decorated First Officer discovered to be an Illyrian, was arrested upon the revelation of her illegal genetic status[4]. She was initially offered a deal by Starfleet where she would be freely released in exchange for a dishonourable discharge. Chin-Riley refused this deal. In retaliation, Starfleet added two additional charges of sedition, threatening twenty years in a Federation penal colony. The subsequent trial resulted in the telling of the history of discrimination and persecution Chin-Riley had faced, and she ultimately admitted she had turned herself in, tired of living a lie. Her lawyer argued that Chin-Riley had sought asylum with Starfleet from hardships she faced for being an Illyrian, and that her commanding officer had granted it. Although the Federation wasn't willing to change their laws regarding genetic engineering for the time being, Chin-Riley was acquitted and officially granted asylum and allowed to return to duty[5]
