CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY:
X'al was born into a freighting family. His father was the captain of the Zf'no Boraal (White Sparrow), a Kressari cargo ship that principally operated around the Cardassian Union, Talarian Republic, the Ferengi Alliance and the Tzenkethi Coalition. Having no standing military and a policy of official neutrality makes the Kressari ideal go-tos for transporting cargo across political boundaries, particularly areas of periodic unrest.
It is entirely possible, even likely, that X'al's father, X'al Senior, was a gun runner an smuggler. He had dealings with Maquis during their war against the Cardassian Union and possible contacts with the Orion Syndicate. This was never confirmed to X'al, was young at the time. His older brother Z'pen was much more involved in his father's business dealings, however, and has in all likelihood maintained some of his father's illicit business connections.
X'al senior was killed in a loading accident on Starbase 214 in 2371 when unloading an unstable cargo of industrial coolant. Following this event, Z'pen took over as captain of the Zf'no Boraal at the young age of 19. Thinking himself unable to captain a ship and raise his bother, he sent X'al junior to live with an aunt and uncle who oversaw an import/export operation from a rented office and cargo bay on Starbase 67.
Growing up in a Federation Starbase, surrounded by the many species who passed through the station on a daily basis, X'al grew up with a strong travel lust. He also grew to admire the Federation, holding the Federation's values in comparison to the sometimes venal and unscrupulous individuals he'd see his father and brother working with. He joined Starfleet when he was 24 and graduated in five years, choosing to pursue a career in Intelligence.
