This is an instructional on how to create a [[writer ID]] number.
* First letter of first ship/base name
** StarBase 118 Ops uses "O" as the prefix character.
** Duronis II Embassy uses "E" as the prefix character.
* Year of start (in format of [[stardate]])
* Month of start (two digits)
* First initial of character first name
* First initial of last name (or 1, if character only has one name)
* Academy list number (one digit)
** If there are two players with the same initials in an Academy class, replace this number with the digit 9 for the player whose application was accepted ''later''.
** ''Prior to 2021, all players had a 0 in this last position unless their writer ID conflicted with another player, in which case the number was incremented to 1.''

In order to construct a writer ID number, you need the following elements, the writer's '''First Ship''', their start year and month, and their first character's first and last name.
{{Heading|Example|Maroon}}
Combine the elements as follows:

From these elements, we will use:
{| class="wikitable"
|-style="text-align:center;"
|'''Placement''' || '''Year''' || '''Month''' || '''Name''' || '''Academy list'''
|-
|USS Atlantis || 2021 (2398) || August (08) || Jean-Luc Picard || Academy 3
|-
|A || 2398 || 08 || JP || 3
|-
|colspan="5"|<center>'''A239809JP3'''</center>
|}

*First Letter of First Ship
*Year of Start (in format of Stardate)
*Month of Start
*First Initial of First Name
*First Initial of Last Name (or 1, if character only has 1 name)
Finally, if everything above is different than anyone else's, the last element is a 0 (zero), otherwise you will increment it.
Once you have all the elements, you combine them like in the example below:
:Shelther Faranster -
:(Apollo, 2392, 01, Sundassa, Faranster, 0)
Finished writer ID number:
:A239201SF0
Now, if you have for example where you have two people start in 2392, during the month of June. One is Robert Jones (graduated the academy 239206.10), and the other is Richard Jackson (graduated the academy 239206.24). Robert Jones ends up on the Constitution, and Richard Jackson ends up on the Columbia, you could potentially end up with two of the same writer ID number:
:C239206RJ0
However, since we have that 0 at the end, we would start with first graduated (if they both graduated at the same time, then we would go with first applied).
:Robert Jones: C239206RJ0
:Richard Jackson: C239206RJ1
===Special cases===
Note the following:
* StarBase 118 Ops uses "O" as the prefix character.
* Duronis II Embassy uses "E" as the prefix character.

To construct a writer ID number, you need the following information for the player:

  • First letter of first ship/base name
    • StarBase 118 Ops uses "O" as the prefix character.
    • Duronis II Embassy uses "E" as the prefix character.
  • Year of start (in format of stardate)
  • Month of start (two digits)
  • First initial of character first name
  • First initial of last name (or 1, if character only has one name)
  • Academy list number (one digit)
    • If there are two players with the same initials in an Academy class, replace this number with the digit 9 for the player whose application was accepted later.
    • Prior to 2021, all players had a 0 in this last position unless their writer ID conflicted with another player, in which case the number was incremented to 1.

Example

Combine the elements as follows:

A239809JP3
