Backstory/Timeline

Veradis is the daughter of a Federation diplomat and a retired starfleet nurse, and had the misfortune to be born a congenitally active telepath. Assaulted with a barrage of foreign thoughts from the moment she first opened her eyes, Veradis spent much of her childhood in Betazed medical and psychological institutions. She grew up very close to her mother and sister, who seemed to be the only two people whose thought intrusions didn't greatly bother her.

Upon reaching puberty (the time when most Betazeds develop their telepathy) she was fortunate, and found that her ability to control and shield thoughts developed enough that she could block most unwanted thoughts. The doctors working with her called her lucky, and allowed her to join her peers in regular Betazed schooling. Yet her shielding abilities never were (and still aren't) perfect and she had troubles clearing out the background noise of other student's thoughts. As a result she drifted towards subjects that allowed her to work alone. She particularly enjoyed scientific and mathematical pursuits finding that their order helped her to focus and clear her mind.

Upon finishing primary schooling Veradis decided to veer from traditional Betazed careers, and applied to the Federation Academy of Science on Rigel V. She studied there for 6 years, achieving a master’s degree in particle physics and thermodynamics. It was also on Rigel where Veradis was first introduced to yoga and much of the music she enjoys. Both pursuits she found very helpful for focusing herself and helping to clear out the unwanted thoughts that came to her. She also started playing 3-D chess, becoming with the mathematical and strategic aspects of the game. She especially enjoys playing against people who can keep their thoughts shielded (such as Vulcans) because she finds it easier to concentrate on her own strategy rather than blocking their thoughts.

After graduating, she was awarded a research position on Deep Space 8, working alongside Federation scientists studying the emissions of a nearby star. She got the chance to complete a paper on the use of 'thermal radiative emissions as an alternative fuel source' and did well with her research. But two years into the project, Deep Space 8 fell into conflict with the Klingons due to it’s posting near the neutral zone. In 2389 was attacked, suffering heavy causalities. Veradis survived, but the attack, alongside the heavy telepathic trauma caused her to retreat from research. After spending two months at home, she returned to the safety of the Federation Science Academy, and completed her doctorate in physics. She also found herself denying the existence of any Federation conflicts during this time, and after she graduated she found a research position on Algeran VII a planet as far away any fighting as possible.

Veradis was recently shaken from her safety zone by the news of the death of her sister, Yelenea. Upon hearing of Yelenea’s death, Veradis was crushed with grief, and yet she knew Yelenea died saving hundreds of innocent lives in the facility. Veradis started thinking that running away was a cowardly decision and that she was hiding away on some back planet. In a rather knee-jerk reaction she fronted her name for the Darwin, and was rather shocked when accepted.

Personality Profile

Veradis is a brilliant and capable scientist. She tends to throw herself into her work and often comes off as a ‘workaholic.’ She had worked with Vulcans for a large part of her career and his adopted their clipped and efficient communications. She prefers to sequester herself with work whenever possible.

Despite the control she has garnered over the years, Veradis still finds that she has trouble filtering out unwanted thoughts. As a result she tends to be withdrawn until she can stabilize her own mental shielding enough. She works and speaks with the precision and efficiency of a scientist, and has the bad trait of impatience and will sometime read a person's thoughts if she feels they are speaking too slowly and therefore summarily ends the conversation. She is a good listener and a fair counselor in her own right. She has little problem taking orders and does not buck against authority unless she fells she isn't being listened to. When she is overstressed either by her thoughts or the clatter of other's thoughts she retreats into mathematical pursuits enjoying the order and silence of such activities.

Veradis is still dealing with the grief over her sister, and is prone to emotional outbursts. She is terrified at being thrown into an institution. Especially since the person who stabilized her the most in her childhood and kept her out of many institutions was her sister.

Medical Notes

Veradis is an extremely powerful telepath - which is as much a weakness as it is a strength. She is capable of telepathy with nearly any species by direct touch, and most two-lobed humanoid species over a reasonable distance. However the amount of energy and focus she spends blocking out other people's thoughts prevents her from using her telepathy frequently unless she is directly controlling it.
