Personnel Dossier

Personality

Personality Type ENTP-A (Extroverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Prospecting, Assertive)

Vel's time spent among the Tellarites gave her a healthy appreciation of argument to the point that she will often challenge even great ideas to ensure they hold water. Her Vulcan upbringing has left her with a penchant for honesty, and she is typically unafraid to be unashamedly blunt with others regardless of their feelings. However, she has a compassionate streak a mile wide that ensures she views everyone as worthy of inclusion and possessed of something worthwhile to contribute. In Vel's eyes, everyone is their own kind of genius.

Despite her inclusive and analytic nature, Vel is possessed of mood swings that may well register on the Richter scale. Her emotions, like the Vulcans of old, run deep and strong. When she is happy, she is often deliriously so but when she is furious she can well seem on the verge of committing homicide. When she feels she's on a roll with her work, she can become laser focused and disappear into it for hours or days on end. New interests, when they take her, tend to consume her thoughts. On top of all this, she has been known to oscillate wildly across the emotional spectrum all in the course of one conversation. Those who work with her are not surprised to see her begin in a highly excitable state, lapse into red-eyed fury at a malfunctioning computer terminal, and then end the whole discussion with a joke and boisterous laugh.

It's exhausting.

Personal Tastes

Favorite Drink Klingon martini (2 fl oz Brilon Silver Label gin, ½ fl oz dry vermouth, 1 dash bloodwine, Golana melon rind to garnish)
Favorite Food Thivelian Hasperat (a Tellarite version of the Bajoran dish Vel grew accustomed to in Agora but has been unable to find elsewhere)
Favorite Music Klingon opera (or as her bunkmates have invariably described it: noise)
Hobbies Swimming, Suus Mahna, Meddling

Personal History

Vel’s parents met aboard the USS Catalina before the Dominion War, an unlikely pairing in that L’Vor was a Vulcan JAG officer and Nicolás Careno an outgoing and bombastic engineer. Vel was likewise born aboard the Catalina, although she relocated to Earth along with her mother at the outbreak of hostilities between the Dominion and the Federation. Nicolás would die when the Catalina was destroyed during the war in 2374, and Vel would grow up with no real memory of him.

As a result of losing her father, Vel grew up clinging to her ‘lost’ human culture and ignored warnings that her Vulcan side would leave her prone to emotional extremes without Surakian philosophy to temper it. She caused no shortage of difficulty for her mother and stepfather during her childhood and adolescence, and despite her gifted intellect she failed an early Starfleet Entrance Exam due to her inability to keep her emotions and bad attitude in check.

Eventually, Vel would discover physical activity as a means to achieve focus and soothe her savage temper. She took particular interest in the Vulcan martial art of Suus Mahna, and would join the martial arts team at Starfleet Academy when she re-took her entrance exam and was admitted later that year.

While she has never truly reconciled herself with her Vulcan heritage and still makes a point of finding her own way without the teachings of Surak, she no longer shuns or violently rejects this part of her culture. Nevertheless, to look at her with her brightly-colored hair and penchant for dramatic flair, one would be hard-pressed to believe she was of the same ilk as the sensible, logical Vulcans.

Academic Background

Vel attended the Starfleet Academy campus at Agora on the Tellarite homeworld of Tellar. Although living on Earth at the time of her acceptance, she opted to attend an off-world campus partly to satisfy her wanderlust and partly to escape the auspices of her mother and step-father.

At the Academy, Vel majored in Engineering and Science with a focus on warp propulsion and theory. Her grades suffered early in her academic career due to a tendency to become distracted by extracurricular activities (a member of the Academy martial arts, wrestling, and swimming teams all). Her most noticeable failure coming in the form of a failing grade in General Federation Law, a class she largely snubbed due to her mother's profession as a lawyer. She was able to take the class again the following semester and secure a passing grade.

However, once she was able to strike a balance her grades improved remarkably and she was able to graduate twenty-third in her class. Despite ample opportunities to enter a research post following her graduation, Vel's cadet cruise and desire to explore prompted her to take an assignment aboard a starship - the USS Columbia.
