Relationships

Family

Mother

Nyala Morton, a renowned xenobiologist focused on marine and coastal alien ecosystems. Their bond is layered and at times complicated (because her mother had very high standards), but filled with affection, mutual admiration, and an almost unspoken connection through their shared passion. They maintained regular holo-calls while she was at Starfleet Academy, often comparing notes on scientific findings.

Father

Taryn Morton, a respected xenoecologis. Taught her to "listen" to environments before acting, meaning he impressed upon her the importance of observing, sensing, and respecting a place before imposing herself upon it. He encouraged moments of quietude and mindfulness, letting a landscape "speak" before deciding how to interact with it. This fostered a lifelong patience and carefulness in her.

Siblings

One younger brother, Kalen Morton.

Friends

Bernadette Chen
Science Officer

Vala and Bernadette met at the Starfleet Academy satellite campus on Starbase 118 where they both trained to become science officers. While they hadn't been particularly close, they have continued to stay in touch after graduation despite being given different posts.

Background

Vala grew up in a vibrant scientific community on Lolagi IV, surrounded by researchers, explorers, and naturalists from many worlds. From a young age, she developed a deep reverence for alien ecosystems and a strong belief that preserving new worlds is essential to preserving the diversity of life itself. Her earliest memory is of watching her mother transplant alien coral with delicate care into a protected reef.

Her father taught her the principle of listening to an environment before acting within it; the art of sensing a place, understanding its rhythms and life, and responding respectfully rather than imposing herself. This fostered in her a quiet patience and an intuitive way of working with nature.

Her grandmother, a deeply spiritual woman, further shaped her worldview. She taught Vala to see living beings not just with the mind, but with the heart, nurturing in her a sense of wonder, empathy, and responsibility towards all forms of life.

Service History: USS Octavia E Butler

Ensign Vala Morton served as a member of the core science team tasked with analyzing a mysterious crystal linked to the crew’s dimensional displacement. Though new to the Octavia E. Butler, Vala played a key role in adapting scanning protocols, proposing non-invasive holographic simulations, and helping interpret the crystal’s harmonic signatures, which ultimately enabled the location of missing personnel and the ship’s safe return to its home universe. Her background in geology and xenobiology proved invaluable in understanding the crystal's possible lifeform origins, while her resilience and curiosity allowed her to navigate the scientific unknown.
