Born into an established Tellarite mining family, Vaarkin had always slightly disappointed his parents by not being keen on the family business. However, when his litter brother was killed in a mining accident that nearly claimed his own life he decided to join Starfleet, rather than continue the family mining tradition.
Once he had recovered from his injuries he informed his parents of his wishes, only to be kicked out of the family home in the argument that ensued. Homeless, he secured passage to earth on an independent trading ship, and subsequently worked in their engine room until he was old enough to enroll in the academy.
He hasn’t spoken to his parents since he left Tellar Prime, but expects them to come round one day. After all, he has fifteen other siblings to help run the family business.
