Born to Jahar and Lenor Simeht on the planet Trill, Colus was the younger of their two children. Colus was outgoing in school and was a participant on the diving and swimming teams throughout high school. Colus is the first in his family to join Starfleet, and his parents have always been supportive of his decision. Colus' older sister, Amala was chosen over Colus to become a joined Trill. At first, Colus was upset at being passed over, but as time continued and he saw the changes in his sister after the joining, he became more accepting of the fact that he was passed over.
