Mission Proposal Form

Instructions

Got an idea for the Starbase 118: Ops crew? Here's how you formally propose it to the command staff.

To use this form, simply:

  • Copy and paste this entire guide from "Begin form here!" onward into an email, follow the instructions, and send it to your CO (CC'ing in your 1st Officer).
  • Follow the instructions in brackets. I.E. [[This is an instruction. You should follow it.]]. Once instructions are followed, they should be removed.

A good mission proposal will be:

  • Interesting. It should grab the crew's attention.
  • Challenging. It should present some difficulty or obstacle to overcome.
  • Different. Please try to vary the missions, especially in regard to common Star Trek missions. For example, if you have a time travel mission, we should be going somewhere interesting or doing something different such as visiting ancient Vulcan, or visiting the Eugenics wars, etc.
  • Not too weird. No missions were the crew are transformed into space weevils where the mission's goal is to eat all of the cheese on the moon.
... actually, that could be fun.
  • Easy to give everyone something to do. An entirely science mission will leave out the security personnel, while a war will typically leave the science guys floundering. Try to have something for everyone.
  • Egalitarian. It's okay to have the mission focus on one character, even if that's your own, but be mindful of the above point. Missions should NOT be solo adventures. If you want to do a personal plot arc, either do it during leave, or run it by your CO first to see if they can run it during another mission.
  • Relatively freeform. A railroad plot ("the characters go HERE, and do THIS, then they do THIS, then they do THIS...") is a bad mission. Additionally, you must accept that your fellow writers can take a mission anywhere once it's began. Please don't get your nose out of joint if it doesn't end the way you want it to.

(( Begin form here! ))

Introduction

[[This section briefly describes at least the first half of the mission in brief. This is designed to give the command staff a 'feel' for your mission, so make sure you make a good impression.]]

[[Words: 100 minimum, 750 maximum.]]

Plot

[[This is the main body of your proposal. It may be as long or as short as you like, but be mindful of other writers creativity. Once a mission is launched, it can go anywhere- with that in mind, railroading your fellow writers along is ill advised. Additionally, your mission should be flexible enough that everyone feels as though they're contributing to the story as a whole, not just 'following the plot'.]]

[[A good way to present this section is as a set of dot points. Feel free to play 'fast and lose' here- as long as we can understand what you mean, it'll be fine.]]

[[Words: 100 minimum, 1500 maximum.]]

Conclusion

[[Describe how your mission ends here. Again, be broad, and don't be afraid to include alternative conclusions. Be prepared for your fellow writers to change things, however...]]

Mission Options (optional)

[[Here is a good place to discuss minor changes to your mission suggestion. For example, if your mission involves Romulans attacking a small research outpost, here is where you might suggest an alternative species (such as Breen). Alternatively, perhaps this mission could take place on the Victory instead of the Starbase- here is a place to discuss the effect this change will have on the mission.]]
