Daniel Frank Underwood was born on a day of celebration, renewal, and hope – New Years Day. His father, the Mayor of Gaffney, South Carolina – and future Governor of the North American continent on Earth – came from a long line of politicians. Daniel’s mother, Diane served as a pilot in StarFleet and met Frank Underwood XI during a political rally on Earth in 2360.
Daniel charted his own course from an early age, turning his back on the long line of politicians in his family. It was action that interested him, not rhetoric. Daniel quickly developed an interest in one thing: what was ‘up there,’ as he would say as a small six year old. As the young Daniel moved into his teens, he soon found his interest in ‘the above,’ fostered by holo-game simulations of flight. These simulations drew him toward imagining himself as a pilot in a World War II fighter plane, a Desert Storm F-16, or a hover ship from the final World War on Earth. His path, however, was not always clear.
At the age of 14, Daniel was sent to the same private school that generations of Underwood’s had attended – Ellsworth Academy for Boys – one of the few exclusive, and male-only educational institutions left on Earth. At Ellsworth, Daniel’s political education began. He was groomed to follow the line of ‘southern’ politicians that came before him. Daniel maintained a respectable grade point average but excelled in the backslapping world of student body politics – elected President of his class during his junior and senior years, chairing the Debate Society, and receiving numerous accolades for his involvement in campus community activities.
Those years showed Daniel the potential for politics and nearly turned the young man off from what was ‘up there.’ A chance encounter with a young StarFleet pilot reawakened that interest and by the end of his time at Ellsworth, Daniel was on course: to space.
Though noticeably disappointed, his father Frank encouraged Daniel’s interests, noting that: “a career in the military is always a good talking point for running.”
His mother, Diane, always seemed to know that her son would follow in her footsteps and almost seemed to take satisfaction in her sons embrace of her former vocation over her husbands.
Though he loved to fly, Daniel was not sold on StarFleet, or the Federation as an institution. The structure and rigidity of military life did not sit well with the strong willed and stubborn young man. And his family history with the Federation had left both parties some cause for concern.
Daniel waited nearly four years before enrolling in StarFleet Academy. Those four years of ‘soul-searching,’ as Daniel calls them, pushed the young man to finally sign-up for StarFleet.
At the Academy, Daniel was known for being outspoken, political, and at times borderline insubordinate. Though hardheaded and vocal, Daniel also possessed the mind of a politician. Cadet Daniel Underwood used his keen insights into human nature – good and bad – to avoid the severe punishments that others who acted out of turn succumbed to at the Academy. Deemed competent by his instructors, admired by his Cadet cohort, and hated by his Academy Counselor, Cadet Underwood worked, fought, and finessed his way to the cusp of graduating from the Academy. Daniel now serves aboard the U.S.S. Centris-A where he is completing his final Cadet Cruise before assignment.
Respected by many and shunned by others, Daniel Underwood has a strong personality that is often manifested to others as driven, even ambitious, but also vulnerable in ways. While Daniel knows what he wants to be, the young Underwood appears to be conflicted over just who exactly he is.
