The '''USS Tiger''' was assigned to StarBase 118 on Stardate 237602.01. One of only a few [[ma:Steamrunner_class|Steamrunner]] Class ships, and the first Steamrunner-Wolverine class in the whole of Starfleet, the Tiger is designated as the primary Search and Rescue (S.A.R.) vehicle for StarBase 118 and surrounding areas.

HMS Tiger was a battlecruiser of the Royal Navy, launched in 1913, the most heavily armoured battlecruiser of the Royal Navy in World War I. A sister ship, Leopard, was planned but not completed.

In World War I, she served in Admiral David Beatty's First Battlecruiser Squadron based at Rosyth. She fought in the battle of Dogger Bank, 24 January 1915, at which 10 of her crew were killed. In the battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, she was hit by fifteen 11-inch shells from the battlecruisers of Admiral Franz von Hipper's First Scouting Group and 24 of her crew were killed. She served as the flagship of the First Battlecruiser Squadron while Lion was under repair and fought at the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight, 17 November 1917.

Tiger is considered by many warship enthusiasts to be the most aesthetically-pleasing warship of the 20th century.

A Tiger cruiser was ordered in 1942, renamed to Bellerophon and Blake, cancelled in 1946, and later completed as Blake (C99).

==HMS Tiger (C20) (1945)==
HMS Tiger was a conventional cruiser of the Royal Navy, one of a three ship class known as the Tiger class. Tiger was ordered as Bellerophon, and laid down in 1941 as part of the Minotaur-class light cruisers. They had a low construction prioity due to more pressing requirements for other ship types during WWII. Bellerophon was renamed Tiger in 1945, and was launched, partially constructed, that year. However, work on Tiger was suspended in 1946.

Construction of Tiger resumed, but to a new design, with Tiger becoming the nameship of the class. Tiger was finally commissioned in 1959. She took part in operations in the Far East during the Indonesian Confrontation in the early 1960s. In 1966, talks between Prime Ministers Harold Wilson and Ian Smith, the latter of which had declared the former colony of Rhodesia independent from Britain due to Britain's insistence on black majority rule there. Tiger was placed in reserve in 1966 before undergoing conversion to a helicopter and commando cruiser from 1968-72.

The refit was very expensive, some say the many millions to convert Tiger, as-well as Blake to helicopter cruisers drained much needed resources better used elsewhere. She was recommissioned in 1972. Tiger took part in the 1977 Silver Jubilee Fleet Review in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II, but only the following year Tiger was placed in reserve, subsequently being placed on the disposal list in 1979. She was scrapped in 1986 in Spain.

“We choose to do these things, not because they are easy but because they are hard.”

John F. Kennedy, 12th September 1962

The USS Tiger was reassigned from patrol duty near Earth to Starbase 118 on stardate 237808.31. One of only a few Steamrunner Class ships, the ship was to undergo an experimental overhaul to investigate the feasibility of updating the class and launching a new subclass of Search & Rescue ships. After a six-month tour of testing and design, the Tiger was commissioned for refit by Admiral Wolf. Once completed, it became the prototype for the new Steamrunner-Wolverine class vessel, and now serves in the expected S.A.R. capacity for StarBase 118.

The Steamrunner class, although normally being categorised as frigates, join the Defiant class ships as being amongst Starfleet's most powerful military vessels. At Wolf 359, the USS Steamrunner (which was still not fully built, and was operating at around 40% efficiency) showed its might against the Borg, scratching up several important hits. The success of the vessel so impressed Starfleet Command, that they immediately drew up plans to build three more Steamrunner class ships: the Tiger, the Horatio and the Yamato.

When not on a specific assignment, the Tiger usually patrols sector 118 and neighboring areas. The ship normally does not have one particular commander, but is instead assigned rotating senior staff from amongst the personnel of Starbase 118, on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. In times of need, the Tiger is reassigned a semi-permanent command staff for specific missions. The Tiger was under such an assignment, with Captain Sidney Riley as her CO.

The USS Tiger was last reassigned to become the primary support vessel for Starbase 118 Ops, and her crew was reassigned to serve at the station. She was later decommissioned, and a new Prometheus class vessel, the USS Tiger-A was launched in 2388 to replace the late USS Independence-A.
