The USS Garuda, NCC-73809, is a Galaxy class starship formerly under the command of Fleet Captain Cassandra Egan Manno and, briefly, of Captain Aron Kells. The Garuda was most recently assigned to the Menthar Corridor, a region of space between the Cardassian Union, Breen Confederacy and Tholian Assembly, via a special arrangement with the Cardassian Union's ruling Detapa Council. As a Galaxy class starship, the Garuda is a deep space science and exploration vessel, designed to run missions for long periods of time without support, as a single-ship exploratory taskforce.

Starfleet Security and Intelligence have their eyes on the unstable, shifting Cardassian government, as well as the post-war Breen, both of which are still rebuilding in the aftermath of their relationships with the Dominion. They believe that the ''Garuda'' crew has an unmatched opportunity to use the ship’s enhanced capabilities to provide constant reports on these and other potential powers in the potentially volatile region. Should the balances of power in any government's sphere of influence tip, the situation could quickly turn, leaving the ''Garuda'' and her crew in a very dangerous predicament.
-Captain Egan Manno was assigned to the ''Garuda'' after the near-destruction of the previous ship assigned to the Menthar Corridor, the {{USS|Mercury}}, and the apparent disappearance of the ''Mercury''’s commanding officer, {{n|Aron|Kells}}, during the [[Gateway Crisis of 2390]]. [[Deep Space 10]], an ancient space station discovered by the ''Mercury'' crew, functions as the ''Garuda'''s operating base.

-Most recently, the Garuda has undergone a change of hands as Captain Cassandra Egan Manno was promoted to Fleet Captain.  Captain Aron Kells once more took a command post and is now in charge of a ship, on which about half the crew served under his other self.  The construction of the new space station, [[Astrofori One]] adds to the plethora of changes as the ship and crew now call this new station their home base.
