The USS Columbia (NCC-85279) is a Nebula starship named in honor of the Earth space shuttle Columbia, which was the first space shuttle launched into space and a pioneer in Earth's early space history. USS Columbia left drydock almost exactly four centuries after her ancestor entered Earth's orbit for the first time.
Named for the first NASA space shuttle to be launched into Earth orbit, the USS Columbia (NCC-85279) is a Nebula Long Term Deep Space Exploration & Reconnaissance Explorer. It is presently assigned to the distant Sagittarius Reach along the galactic edge and is under the command of Captain Theo Whittaker. Lieutenant Commander Jarred Thoran serves as it’s Executive Officer.

Originally launched in 2382 as part of a Starfleet initiative to return to the peaceful exploration of space after over a decade of strife with the Borg, the Dominion and other external threats, the Columbia was originally assigned to explore the Gamma Quadrant before it was reassigned to 118 as it’s primary support vessel, where it remained in service until 2390 when it was severely damaged during the course of an assignment and put into drydock for extensive repairs in refits.
Commissioning of the new starship Columbia marked a change for Starfleet. With the Dominion War long over and peace talks with the Romulan Star Empire progressing, StarFleet shifted construction of its vessels away from wartime duty and toward its primary mission of exploration. The existing Nebula design facilitated this change in mission.

Columbia eschewed the battle capabilities of some more recent vessels; she was instead well equipped with some of the latest breaking and largely untested Starfleet technology. What Columbia lacked in offensive firepower, she made up with technological advancement.
These repairs and refits were completed by mid-2391 and command was given to Captain Benjamin Livingston. Assigned to the Trinity-Serellan Defence Fleet, Columbia sported a new bridge module, enhanced sensor capabilities, additional support craft and other system upgrades. By 2392, command of the Columbia had passed to Commander Brek before the vessel was ordered to return to Utopia Planitia for further upgrades and testing at the end of the year.

While she served through 2382 and part of 2383 as an exploration vessel, she was soon reassigned, with her crew, to 118 Operations. She was active as the field ship in that capacity, until 2384, when she was put into dry-dock for a review of her warp systems. Following the failed attempt at creating an artificial wormhole for incredibly fast interstellar travel, the Columbia was severely damaged.  After limping back to StarBase 118, Captain Mal Avatar and his crew were transferred to StarBase 118.
In September 2393, the 'Columbia' was once again reassigned to 118 as the primary support vessel for the Trojan-II class space station and placed under the captaincy of Sal Taybrim where it served for over a year with distinction, seeing action against the resurgent forces of the Orion Syndicate in the Trinity Sector. In the December of 2394, the vessel was seconded to the Andaris Task Force and upon arrival at Deep Space 26 ordered to undergo its most extensive refits yet.

Columbia's active service in support of StarBase 118 came to a violent end in 2390 when the ship was severely damaged during a mission. Extensive repairs were required, and Starfleet took the opportunity to refit the ship with upgraded systems and modules, including a new bridge module, expanded sensor capability, additional support craft, and other system upgrades.
Work on the ship continued until mid-2395 when it was placed into active service once again and assigned to the Sagittarius Reach on a mission of long term space exploration under the command of Captain Whittaker. Columbia now features an entirely new bridge module and Captain’s Yacht, an uprated propulsion system that allows it to reach a maximum speed of Warp 9.9, a state-of-the-art sensor suite based off of those found aboard Luna starships, cutting edge medical facilities and- perhaps most importantly- greatly expanded scientific facilities and laboratories. These additions and upgrades allow the Columbia to operate independent of Starfleet facilities and outposts for up to five years.

On stardate 239107.14, Commander Ben Livingston took command of Columbia as it set out on a new mission of exploration. After an ill-fated mission where Captain Livingston was grievously injured and transferred to Starbase 118 for medical treatment, Commander Brek temporarily took command and the Columbia flew for 2 more missions before she was decommissioned on 239211.12.  She returned to Earth for repairs and upgrades before returning to StarBase 118 as it's primary support ship on 239309.18 under the command of Captain Sal Taybrim and Lt. Commander Theo Whittaker.

In late 2394 the vessel was again reassigned along with Commander Theo Whittaker to the Andaris Task Force in the Par'tha Expanse.
