History
The highly technological society of the Tiburons is a direct outgrowth of alien conquest. The warlike, authoritarian Ucali conquered the pastoral inhabitants of the planet Tiburon in a war for resources fourteen centuries ago.
The elites of the Ucali ruled Tiburon with cruelty, allowing the infamous butcher Zora to conduct atrocities in the name of "genetic experimentation" on the Tiburon populace.
However, the native Tiburon cleverly subverted their captors, tempting them into pleasure, gratification, and eventual decadence. The Ucali finally underwent a total cultural meltdown; their young military cadets and elite soldiers refused to follow the orders of a corrupt regime that no longer practiced the stern asceticism it preached.
During a period of anarchy, the Tiburon population interbred with the Ucali, removing the problem and ending the caste system the Ucali had enforced.
Although the Tiburons rejected science for centuries, they were forced to maintain an intricate technical infrastructure to keep their planet alive after its looting and devastation by the Ucali. The work of Neprin and others led to a culture and economy heavily dependent on robots and labor-saving devices, freeing the Tiburons themselves to pursue only joy and pleasure.
The brilliant acoustic physicist Dr. Sevrin rebelled against this insulated culture, claiming that over-reliance on technology had weakened the Tiburons. It does seems to have suppressed their immune systems, the incurable and deadly disease synthococcus novae infects hundreds of thousands of Tiburons. (He was an expert in acoustics, electronics and communications.)
Fortunately, Tiburon's high level of technology remains well able to control any problem it may have created (Dr. Sevrin was, it turned out, insane) not least because the Tiburon treat the satisfaction of curiosity as a crucial pleasure. The joys of scientific investigation and exploration animate Tiburon culture. They also delight in subverting intolerant or authoritarian regimes.
Ever since joining the Federation in 2229, Tiburon representatives on the Federation Council or in Starfleet constantly urge it to take a more active role in deposing despotic rulers. To many Tiburons, there are self-evidently higher virtues than the non-interference doctrine of the Prime Directive
Several Suliban and Vanoben settled on the planet. The Tiburon did not mix themselves with the settlers.
In 2285, some civil unrest erupted over the exploitation of a recent dilithium discovery. A Tellarite mining corporation caused several of the local politicians to disappear, only to be replaced with those friendly to off world trade with this corporation. Federation officials had been unsuccessful in prosecuting those involved as of late 2286.
In 2370, a party of Tiburons visited Deep Space 9 to witness the Illumination of The Prodigal. A Tiburonian Starfleet lieutenant also served on DS9 in that year.
In 2377, Grauq killed a Tiburonian crewmember of the Otamawan. Grauq had to endure the smell of the decomposing body.
In the Dominion War Tiburon was attacked by Jem'Hadar vessels. Elias Vaughn was there and witnessed the brilliant explosions as the ships exploded.
Government
The Tiburons have an executive council with 15 members. 5 of these are artificial intelligences created by them to oversee certain aspects of their society. Each one of these AI’s is in charge of one of the 5 branches of the government and has 2 living advisors working with it.
Description
Tiburons are known for their large, elaborately flanged ears and a row of tiny, bony protrusions running across the head and down the neck. Their skin ranges in color from salmon pink to tan. It is common for Tiburons to adorn their skin with tribal markings, often taking the form of blue tattoos.
Physiology
Genetic testing has indicated that the Tiburons might be the descendants of Humans. However a certain degree of genetic mutation has resulted in their outward differences from the Human norm.
Study of their evolution by Federation experts would seem to indicate the possibility that they were transplanted here from Earth by some unknown species. The environment would over time have resulted in some minor genetic alterations. The enormous planet wide cross breeding with the Ucali is the most likely explanation for the radical differences between.
Tiburon corpses decompose rapidly when they die, even in cold temperatures. For this reason, a Tiburonian funeral must take place less than 32 hours after the death.
Psychology
Tiburons project an easy-going, sensual, hedonistic image. They enjoy respect without formality and honor those with open minds. However, their desires can easily become drives; a dedicated, single-minded Tiburon is far from the contradiction in terms it might seem.
Many Tiburons become scientists, and their easy-going charm makes them natural diplomats or lovable rogues.
Religion
Tiburon culture does not embrace mysticism. This seems to be as a result of their having been subjugated to harsh discipline during the occupation of their world by the Ucali. During this time all records, data and memory of any religious beliefs were eradicated from their society.
However since then a very small miniscule minority have joined various religions belonging to other species.

They are a very leisure oriented people and any activity that inspires pleasure and results in enjoyment can usually be found in practice some where on their world.

They are a very leisure oriented people and love music, good food and all kinds of spirits and other entertainment pharmaceuticals.
Food and drink
- Glurtch, a woodsy, non-alcoholic beverage. Authentic Tiburonian Glurtch must be consumed within an hour of serving, otherwise it acquires an unpleasant, prickly flavour, and quickly becomes unpalatable.[1]
Customs
It is customary for the deceased to be cremated at the funeral, and those attending honor their memory by swallowing some of the ashes.
Technology
Products of one of the most intensely technological cultures in the Federation, Tiburons have plenty of opportunities to study advanced scientific techniques even before joining Starfleet.
Economy
They have a number of long standing trade deals but they have to import way more than they export. Fortunately they import less expensive raw materials and foods and export numerous high tech devices. This allows them to maintain a fairly strong economy.
Military
They never developed a real military. Not even after they were able to influence the Ucali in such a way as to cause unrest among their own ranks. Even now they maintain only a small token police force with which to maintain peace and order.
Federation Intelligence Files
In 2149, Doctor Phlox attended an IME conference on Tiburon, where he briefly met a member of the Mazarite delegation. Unknown to him at the time, this member was actually a Klingon expert in metagenic research, named Dr. Antaak. The Klingons were not invited to the conference.
T'Lor, a Tiburonian, who served as a Starfleet science officer on Deep Space 9 in the early 2370s. He was killed by the Jem'Hadar on Torga IV.
In 2379, Nidani Ledrah, a Tiburon female, served aboard the USS Titan as chief engineer.
