The Borderlands is a large swath of neutral space along the Klingon border. Very little is officially known about this region, with much data kept classified by Starfleet Intelligence and privy only to the highest levels of Starfleet Science.

In early 2391, Starfleet lost contact with the USS Hermes, which was patrolling the area, and the USS Gemini was dispatched to investigate.
